BPRC Statement on the Killing of Alex Pretti by Federal Agents

Today, we witnessed the killing of a U.S. citizen at the hands of a federal agent. The death of Alex Pretti — a nurse who dedicated his life to caring for others — is a tragedy that demands more than excuses or deflection.

This moment cannot be reduced to familiar arguments about training gaps or delayed transparency. What occurred reflects a deeper failure: a lack of empathy and an absence of real accountability. Generations before us fought for the right to organize, to protest peacefully, and to speak out in defense of others. Those rights must not come with a death sentence.

When federal agents are allowed to kill citizens who are exercising their voices in protest of violence and brutality, we move dangerously close to autocracy. It sends a chilling message that the government may arbitrarily decide who lives and who dies. That is not order — it is chaos, and it is unacceptable.

We must be able to support one another, engage honestly, and dissent without fear of losing our lives for challenging those in power.

Our thoughts are with the family of Alex Pretti, a nurse at the Minneapolis VA who served those who bravely served our country. We also stand with the family of Renee Good and all individuals who have experienced violence and brutality at the hands of ICE agents. There must be full accountability for these acts of violence. Anything less is a failure of justice.
