Ann Uccello was a graduate of the Class of 1944, received a Doctoral Honorary Degree in 1971 and received the Distinguished Alumna Award in 1978.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of Ann Uccello’s passing.  She was a strong, accomplished, and fearless woman who gave her talents to the community, University and city that she loved.  She inspired women to believe in and pursue their potential, and she inspired all those with whom she worked to believe that harnessing the talents of all citizens would advance the common good."

Rhona Free, President

USJ to Offer Tuition Discount to
First Choice Health Centers, Inc. Employees

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) announces an expanded partnership with First Choice Health Centers, Inc. (FCHC). Program highlights include enhanced connections between the FCHC’s clinical staff and USJ faculty and 20% USJ tuition discounts for First Choice Health Centers employees.

USJ Provost Michelle Kalis, Ph.D., states, “First Choice Health Centers has been a key partner for USJ in providing high-quality clinical experiences for many USJ students. We are pleased to expand this partnership with a tuition discount to FCHC employees. USJ relies on clinical partners to continue to graduate healthcare practitioners who are helping to address the workforce shortage in Connecticut.”

Eligible full-time employees may participate in undergraduate and graduate programs at USJ, except for Pharmacy and Physician Assistant Studies, and will have a waived application fee.

By providing enhanced opportunities for USJ students’ clinical training at FCHC during their education, the partnership paves a pathway for future employment at FCHC following graduation.

“First Choice is delighted by this expanded partnership with University of Saint Joseph (USJ).  First Choice has been so impressed by the work of the USJ students who have come to us for clinical experience over the years—we’ve hired several as clinical providers. This arrangement has truly grown over the years. First Choice along with the patients we serve are beneficiaries of this partnership with USJ,” adds Jeffrey Steele, President/CEO of the organization.

Students interested in beginning a program of study through the Partnership in Excellence Program should contact the USJ Office of Admissions at 860.231.5216 or admis...@usj.edu.

On May 4, 2023 Father Joseph Cheah, OSM, Ph.D. and Professor of Religious Studies and Theology at the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) and other delegates of the Asian American Christian Collaborative (AACC) attended a White House meeting to address central issues faced by Asian American communities.

They were invited to a listening session by the domestic policy advisor of the Biden-Harris administration in which specific policy proposals on education, mental health, gun violence, and racial solidarity were discussed.

The White House also held a public forum at George Washington University the previous day on the  theme of  “Visible Together,” a recognition that  “AA (Asian Americans) and NHPI (Native Hawaiian Pacific Islanders) does not describe a singular population or demographic, but rather a coalition that is powerful for its vastness and complexity.”

Father Cheah’s area of research and teaching at USJ is in the field of Asian American religions and race, and Asian American theology.

His newest book, Anti-Asian Racism: Myths, Stereotypes, and Catholic Social Teachings, challenges the politics of exclusion of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) in the Church’s documents on racism by examining the pervasive and destructive stereotypes that are part and parcel to the Asian American experience, namely, perpetual foreigner, Yellow Peril, and the myth of the model minority.

Father Cheah is also the author of Race and Religion in American Buddhism: White Supremacy and Immigrant Adaptation, co-author of Theological Reflections on “Gangnam Style”: A Racial, Sexual and Cultural Critique and co-editor of the Palgrave Macmillan series Asian Christianity in the Diaspora. He  is a recipient of two awards from the State of Connecticut for his work with AAPI communities and is also a co-sponsor of an orphanage in Kyauktan, Myanmar (Burma).
