Hi Chris,

I am interested in comparing the overlap of the home ranges of multiple animals but at the 50% akde contour in addition to the 95% akde contour. I am using this in complement to the encounter () function to identify groups of social animals based on whether they come in contact and if their core areas overlap. As far as I can tell akde will produce an estimate of the 50% UD that you can specify when creating a .shp, with 'UD.level ='  but that is not compatible with the downstream functions. Is there a way to specify when calculating either overlap, akde or encounter you only want to use the 50% UD area estimate rather than the 95% UD area?

Many thanks,
Kyana

Hi Kyana,

The output of overlap() is a measure of similarity between the entire distributions, and not specific coverage areas. I purposely avoided comparing specific coverage areas, like 50% or 95%.
The output of akde() has the full information as well, but if you export to a polygon or shapefile, then you have to specify coverage percentages. encounter() is similar. Alternatively, you could also export a raster.

Best,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply. I've looked into the Bhattacharyya coefficient used in the overlap function a bit more and I think I see why you made it that way.  I'll use the the polygon work around to specify the percentage and see how that looks for the social groups compared to the encounter space.

Cheers,
Kyana
