Bolters,

At NS many of us leave ropes hanging on undeveloped routes; in fact it’s policy to mark new applications with signs or ropes. Over the years we’ve lost very little gear to theft.

During a weekday before last weekend, someone either stole my static and dynamic ropes set for a toprope at Little Guides Wall, or they pulled everything up top.  I didn’t have time to go up and look, but a loose biner was found below, so they may have stolen the dynamic and gone up top to steal the static.

This TR was clearly marked by a sign saying I’m stress testing the choss on this future route.

Bummer.

Beware!

That sucks john.

Just a heads up, we got spools of static here at climbtech.

It does suck. Nothing like getting rewarded for your hard work in this manner. In that same location, I had my biners stripped from the runners I had going to the oak tree when I did Rattled. I had left the anchor setup to explore the same line that John is now doing. I did not leave a rope which means that someone went up top and took the biners they wanted, which was better than taking the runners to me except that the static lines were still sitting on the cliff face appearing to be still sound anchors.

Use your own judgment when leaving gear and recheck what you thought was a sound anchor system over the top on any later outings.

I've always packed in and packed out everything I need for development or working routes.  I got conditioned many years ago after a string of repeated thefts from boyscouts and others.  I also dont like leaving gear exposed to the weather, particularly ropes.  Certainly sucks to have to worry about all this but that's our reality sometimes.
