You folks are the lynchpin of climbing access and community involvement , therefore I am sending you this maybe as a duplicate.

Please help get the word out.

John Cook is retiring.

He is THE GUY, who for over 20 years has been responsible for the 7 and half miles of Barton Creek Greenbelt upstream from Zilker Park and Barton Springs.

It was his continuous support of the many uses (climbing, biking, hiking, swimming)  that has kept this greenbelt accessible for all users for over 20 years.

Have you ever climbed Fern Bar at Gus Fruh and looked at the rock in the belay area with cuts in it? Wondered about it?

Way back in the day, that was the ONLY trail along that side of the creek.

Needless to say, there was CONFLICT between bikers and climbers in that narrow gap.

John Cook ( on his days off) brought a 90 pound jack hammer and compressor to the location and jackhammered out the alternate trail that bikes and pedestrians use today. AND used the jackhammer to reduce the size of that rock to provide a better belay spot.

When high water has left trees and other debris blocking a trail, it was him and his staff that cleared the trails.

When homeless people set up camps deep in the greenbelt and are un-responsible for fire and or biological hazards, it was John Cook who would work with police to encourage the homeless to find another location.

CTM and all climbers has benefitted from his support of hardware upgrades and new route approvals.

So mark you calendar for

Saturday, July 19 from 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM
Sholtz Garten 1607 San Jacinto Blvd Austin, TX

Hosts Stan Ostrum & Bart Bombay have set up a great reception.

Please invite others in your organization who have volunteered/worked with John Cook and/or have a strong interest in BCGB.

Stan and Bart will provide appetizers and some good quantity of tasty local beer, and there will also be much discussion about the future of BCGB, so bring your ideas along with you!

I look forward to seeing you there!
