Forum on Educational Reform

Friends and Neighbors,

This coming Tuesday, Nov. 30, there will be an important forum on Public Education which will take place at COOP High School starting promptly at 7pm.

It features Diane Ravitch, a former official in the both the Clinton and Bush administrations. Dr. Ravitch is a leading national critic of both the Bush "No Child Left Behind" and the similar Obama, "Race to the Top," programs.

Ravitch will appear with 12 local citizens, including school officials, union folks, parents, students, and watchdogs, all of whom are now reading her landmark book, The Death and Life of the Great American School System, in preparation.

The discussion is the brainstorm of, and will be moderated by, Paul Bass.  It will focus on how to move forward towards improved education for all; and the pros and cons of various types of school reform.  See his article in the New Haven Independent here: http://newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/read_this_book._then_lets_talk/#cmt

There is no question that school reform is necessary. But there is a wide divergence of opinion as to how that reform should look. On one side you have the Bush/Obama policies which highlight using high-stakes standardized testing to rate teachers and schools, together with offering regional magnet and charter schools as choices.

(Charter schools are schools that are publicly financed but privately run.)

Critics such as Ravitch feel, in part, that high-stakes testing fosters "teaching to the test" which does little to encourage true learning; and that offering magnet and charter choices promotes the evisceration of the neighborhood school, which is often one of the few remaining bulwarks of neighborhood life.

In addition, the magnet/charter option often necessitates young students spending hours per week on a bus with the resultant higher asthma rates, and at great expense to the City in these difficult financial times.

As many of you know I have become very interested in Public Education, and school reform, since leaving the Board of Aldermen. This interest has been sparked, in large part, by my reading books by both Dr. Ravitch and by Dr. James Comer of the Yale Child Study Center.

I hope that many of you will be able to attend this forum. I feel the discussion should greatly inform all of us at this critical juncture in New Haven's public education.  I hope also that people will view this effort in the spirit in which it is being offered, as a means to inform and perhaps influence school reform in New Haven and elsewhere.

Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving,

Allan

    Damn, this sounds amazing.
I guess I'll watch the web broadcast of this at the Independent website.
