Why am I the only person that asks questions on this group?

Am I abusing this service?

I kinda understood a user group to be for this kind of stuff?

Or have you guys all evolved beyond that and don't need help anymore?

Or don't you want the other guys to know that you got stuck?

Or do you rather Google stuff for 6 months before you post here?

Or what?

Curious,

Hi Mark,

I don't think you are the only one asking questions, it's just that I don't really know the answer :)

I do however remember doing something similiar years ago, and we ended up putting the different users in one group (is that even the same term) where we set the group permissions instead of the individual user permissions. That way, application one could create a file in a specific folder, and application two, running as a different user, but in the same group, could happily modify the file.

That being said, it was about 8 years ago, on Mandrake, if I remember correctly. On paper, it looks like a great theory, but I'm out of touch with these things!

Best regards,
Ewald

Hi Mark,

good question.

Being lazy I am googling stuff first before investing the time to write about the problems. Next step is usually asking coworkers sitting next to me. Then if I have some book about this topic I'll try to find it there.

After that I go to some mailing lists and ask there. Could be here or some more specific list like jruby-users for example.

You're certainly not abusing this list. But it has been very quite the last months here.

I think it depends on which phase of building you're at. I think, in the beginning of a new project I will tend to post more than when the project is more mature. Right now I'm doing a lot of optimising and maintenance, so not too much wizardry happening.

Or it might just be that you're the only one still doing work :) everyone else is already winding down for year end....

regards
Dudley

Hi Mark,

Nice questions, I liked the logging questions you posted. Pity that one was quiet on responses.

Kind Regards,
Dion

I guess because I work alone, you guys are my buddy that I tap on the shoulder when I'm wasting time on Google and not getting a decent answer on Stack Overflow.

Stack overflow is awesome.

StackOverflow accounts for the majority of my questions that might have been asked here in the past. The whole philosophy of asking there makes one think methodically enough that it weeds out so many noobish questions. I've typed up a half-page question and then discarded it as I understood the problem before I even hit submit (more than once).

... which is not to say I think your question was noobish.

That said, I think I went to my first JUG meeting 9 years ago and I can't remember in that time the list ever being massively active. That only happens when someone mentions that their IDE is better than everyone else's. My previous theory was that people had moved off Java (not using it a lot myself at the moment) but that can't have been the case 5 - 10 years ago.

Hey Fritz,

I sure your using the wrong IDE, you should switch to the one I use, it is MUCH, MUCH better, you can even compile code in it.

Cheers

Never! Gmail or death!

(it even lets me save drafts of my code)

For sure these types of groups were busier with questions in the days before Google and interwebs, but I hope that local communities like ours remain relevant and active despite globalisation we see - and as shining example I think silicon cape is doing a great job community building

PS. Weather in Auckland sunny but a bit windy right now ;) Looking good for a dry game tonight :)
