Hi,

In light of all these cool new Async, non blocking and evented frameworks as well as scripting happening on the Java VM,

is CTJUG still considered just Java ? or should we wear the polyglot hat now and offer up any Ecma, Scala etc etc advices

Is this good bye my heavy MVC (in all its renditions) and hello, the super fast non blocking push Future ?

Kind Regards,

Personally I wouldn't have a problem if people posted Scala-ish questions.  I mean someone can have a problem with Java inside their Scala code - and it might not be easy to extract the pure Java parts.

And I think it can be informative to be exposed to different ways of doing things eg using Scala and Java together.

Then newer versions of Scala seems to have a Scala reflection Api - at that level I'm not so sure as a Java developer wouldn't be familiar with those aspects.

Just my opinion,

In short: my vote would be against including scala-ish questions.

Longer version: this forum is fairly quiet, so it can be quite exciting when there's a post. I have no (current) interest  in scala at all, so getting all excited about a bit of activity would be a complete let down if the question wasn't a pure java question. If I wanted to participate in scala discussions, I would subscribe to a scala group e.g. a google group called CTSUG-forum (which at the moment doesn't appear to exist...hint hint).

+1 for anything that once encounters in day to day jobs as a Java Dev.. - for example : due to work demands I have been forced to code in Javascript and flash for the last 2 years -.. and its getting more and more.. (how I long for coding in Java....)

You know those aging cobol guys who seem to aimlessly wander the
corridors of banking and insurance institutions? Well, that's going to
be us one these days, so yes, i reckon we should broaden our minds
open this forum up to anything that runs on the JVM.

+1 from me as well.

Java is many things: A language, a JVM, a platform, a brand (aka a masterful marketing campaign in the 1990's)...

The crown jewel is the JVM, and long may it live with the support of other languages!

One of these days? Not last year already?

+1 for anything on the JVM. I'm not running anything on the JVM at the
moment but it's on the todo list to try something trendy.

I hear YuppieChef runs Clojure on their site's backend. I wouldn't
have picked them as the company most likely to be on the cutting edge
(except for kitchen knives). Who else is running other JVM languages
in Cape Town?

As to list traffic - the CTRB list is pretty quiet as well. They do
have regular meetings though.

+1 with a reservation, and that is that all polygot questions be distinct from Java language questions.
This way, those not interested in that particular language can overlook it.
Perhaps add "polygot" followed by the language to the subject line?
