We are a mere two weeks away from the second Cape Town Baroque Festival (CTBF). Don't miss this opportunity to hear a stellar line-up of local and international soloists and ensembles over Heritage Weekend (21 - 23 September). 


Tickets are selling fast, so please avoid disappointment by booking tickets in advance. Please note that the Saturday performance of 'David Bowie Reworked' is already sold out, but there are a few tickets left for the Sunday repeat performance. 


We are also delighted to announce that Anna Stoddard will present a pre-concert talk to the 'Evening of Baroque chamber music' concert on Saturday 22 September. The talk will take place at 19.15 in the Baxter Concert Hall and admission is included in the concert ticket price.

Glorious Baroque – CTBF Opening Concert

Friday 21 September, 20.00

St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, De Waterkant

The opening concert of the 2018 CTBF brings together sopranos Lynelle Kenned and Elsabé Richter, mezzo-soprano Lusibalwethu Sesanti, special international guest Carin van Heerden (baroque oboe, recorder), as well as VOX Cape Town choir and Camerata Tinta Barocca in an exciting programme of vocal and instrumental repertoire from the high Baroque. The central work in this concert is Vivaldi’s popular Gloria RV 589. The programme will be directed from the harpsichord by CTBF artistic director Erik Dippenaar

Architectural walking tour of UCT Hiddingh Campus with John Rennie

Heritage architect John Rennie leads a walking tour of the historic UCT Hidding Campus, offering insights into a cluster of historically significant buildings in close proximity to each other.

David Bowie Reworked - SOLD OUT

Saturday 22 September 16.00–17.00

Alexander Upstairs, Alexander Bar, 76 Strand Street

This concert features works from the heyday of the iconic musician and entertainer David Bowie, dubbed the “Chameleon of Rock” and a master of reinvention. The works are conceptually reimagined as baroque compositions – a nod to his ability to revamp his music and image numerous times over a long and illustrious career. The music has been arranged by Stellenbosch-based composer Jan-Hendrik Harley, and will be performed on period instruments. The Bowie pieces will alternate with anonymous baroque works that reflect the recurring themes of angst, fear and alienation found in Bowie’s music.

With: Ensemble Je Ne Comprends Pas – Jan-Hendrik Harley (violin, guitar and direction), Joshua Frank (recorder and guitar), Mariechen Meyer (double bass) and John Pringle (percussion)

An evening of Baroque chamber music

Pre-concert talk by Anna Stoddard, 19.15 in the Baxter Concert Hall

In this exciting first-time collaboration between the CTBF and the Cape Town Concert Series, members of Camerata Tinta Barocca and Baroque2000 (Durban), along with international early music specialist Carin van Heerden (recorder, baroque oboe) present a programme of chamber music from the 18th century.

All Mozart organ duo recital

Organists Mario Nell and Winand Grundling present an all-Mozart duo recital programme including the two F minor fantasias K608 and K594, composed in the last year of Mozart’s life for a mechanical organ in a clock, and a transcription of the ever green ‘Jupiter’ Symphony K551.

Mixed Doubles – 17th century pop songs for two voices and plucked strings

Sunday 23 September, 16.00–17.00

South African Slave Church Museum, 40 Long Street

The Lutesong duo and guests present a programme of popular Spanish and Italian music from the 17th century, arranged for tenor, mezzo-soprano and different combinations of lutes, theorbos and baroque guitar. Audiences can expect some catchy tunes and tight ensemble work as Lente Louw, Nick de Jager, Uwe Grosser and Vera Vukovic perform works by Marìn, Mudarra, Kapsperger and Caccini.
