[CT Birds] Mississippi Kite- Monroe

If you live in the Monroe/Shelton area, keep a look out for an adult Mississippi Kite. I've seen it fly over our backyard five times since June 15th. This afternoon, I saw it make several loops over my neighbor's backyard then dive down behind some trees where I lost sight of it.


Three times I've seen it take the same flight path over my house on Cardinal Lane in Monroe heading either towards Wheeler Road (near the intersection of Thompson Street) or flying in the opposite direction towards Walnut Street.


My understanding is that it's a rare bird for this area especially this time of the year. It would be helpful if there are other birders in the area to help look for it.

Mississippi Kite both seen and heard at 1:20 today. I was just getting ready to run out to do some errands and thought I'd take a quick look before I left. It flew over our driveway and headed down Gray Street towards North Street in Shelton. It flew a in a large loop over the lot on the corner of Gray and North Street. I heard it calling at least 3 times. I was able to get a few more pictures.

The kite is now perched in the dead tree in our backyard preening. It's been there for at least 20 minutes.

Don't start up your engines yet! We haven't seen it so far today but I wanted to let everyone know that we will probably not be home for a good part of the day.
Everyone has been very respectful asking permission to stop by. I may not be able to get to my email so I just wanted to let you know, that's you're welcome to come over and look around while we're not here. Our neighbors are aware of what's going on and they're ok with it.
The best place to look for it is from the side lawn with the big pine tree where you can see in all directions. I've seen it flying high up most of the time but the last few days, I've also seen it flying just above the trees. It doesn't seem to have the same flight pattern any more.

The Mississippi Kite made several appearances again today to the delight of many birders!


I have a list of 13 sightings today and there were probably a few that I missed. Frank Gallo saw it at 6:01 PM (going south distant) and another sighting at 6:04 PM (going south closer) which he thinks may have been a second bird.


An added bonus today was a young pine siskin at one of the tube feeders.



I think a good time was had by all with many happy birders adding it to their Life List.


The invitation still stands for any one that would like to come over and try their luck at seeing it.

Despite several birders looking for it, the Mississippi Kite was only seen once today at 2:32 PM.
The last birder left around 7:15 PM. Bob & I looked for it until almost 8 PM with no luck.

There were no sightings of the Mississippi Kite near our house yesterday or today. Brendan Reilly was here this morning and didn't see it here but spotted it on Moose Hill Road just a few houses away from St. John's Cemetery. That location is also pretty close to Whitney Farms Golf Course on Rte 110. Both the cemetery and golf course have been mentioned as good locations to look for a nest.


You're still welcome to come look for it from our house on 5 Cardinal Lane, Monroe but the sightings are few and far between. It's still in the area but we're not seeing it from our house as frequently as we were before. Feel free to email me for suggestions of where to look for it if you decide to widen the search.


It's been our pleasure meeting so many great people and sharing the excitement of seeing this rare bird in CT!
