Chester, 11/6 - GREAT-BLUE HERON in the Burr Brook stream off of Butter Jones Road. The stream has been bone-dry for a while (unusual), due to the summer drought, but the recent rain has almost returned it to normal. The heron probably would have stayed where it was, if my Mom and I didn't stop and stare. It flew off downstream - probably didn't go far. (And it may eventually turn up at our water garden one of these mornings.)
Also: I may have seen a CATTLE EGRET in Centerbrook, in the cow fields across the street from Riggio's Garden Center. This was around 9:30 in the morning. I was pulling out of Riggio's and didn't have long to look, but the size and body shape sure said "cattle egret" to me. If anyone is in that neighborhood, it might be worth checking.

My husband and I went out to Hammonasset State Park this morning to see what
was out there. We did see the Northern gannets that were already reported,
lots of Common Loons, and a small flock of Horned Larks in the Meig's Point
parking lot along with the black-bellied plovers and a couple Dunlin. We
also saw three Marsh Wrens on the trail out to Willard's Island. They were
on the left before the trail splits. One was about 6 feet from us, almost
too close to focus our binos on it! The other two were not much further
away in the reeds. Only our second sighting of these birds and by far the
best!

Stratford, Boothe Park -- 26 fly-by PURPLE FINCH.
Stratford yard -- 1 FOX SPARROW (day 3) and 5 PURPLE FINCH at feeders.
Hawks were somewhat slow today despite the north wind at the surface partly
because we had all that tropical moisture from Tomas streaming in from the
SSE (the cloud cover, especially early and late). If you watched the sky you
could see low level clouds moving south while everything in the mid to upper
level went straight north. The high to the southwest near Arkansas will not
be able to move in like we'd want since the lows keep coming from south to
north in the Atlantic. One will bomb out a bit and form a coastal storm on
Monday. After that we can clear out the stacked lows and build in a Canadian
high to put the wind north at all levels to get the hawks moving in good
numbers. The models have changed the forecast quite a bit in the last 24
hours, but that should be the general idea.
