The Greylag Goose was a little tricky today (Sunday); I suspect he or she was pretty far away from the road behind the white house east of Branford Road (about a quarter of a mile) and north of Whirlwind Road around noon (there were a lot of geese back there), but then someone started firing a rifle and all the geese took off. They apparently ended up at Mackenzie Reservoir north of Whirlwind Road near the pull-off, which has started to open up, and the Greylag was closest of the bunch, trying to sleep, but with its eye on us the whole time (a birder from PA I met at Whirlwind Road was there, too--and two birders from MA had just left), popping his/her head up from time to time.

Black birds of all types topped trees all over the area today. I counted over 25
Male Red-Wing Black Birds on one tree alone.Along with them in the same tree
were 6 grackles and also starlings 15+. One male cowbird. There were also
(3)black birds I could not ID. Brownish wing cover, yellow eyes, slightly
smaller tail than grackles. In a nearby tree, 7 American Crows were protesting
the arrivals. There were also 2 immature Red-Tails canvasing the field for most
of the day.

The winter eagle population on the CT River has been winding down at a steady
rate since early Feb. The following may be of interest to some;
?
Weekend average eagle sightings.
Feb. 7-8:? 32 eagles
Feb. 14-15:? 27 eagle
Feb. 21-22:? 24 eagles.
Feb.28-March 1:? 17 eagles
March 7:? 10 eagles
?
??? The average trip on the RiverQuest out of Essex spots 5-7 adult eagles?and
the remainder of the tally are sub-adults of various age groups.? Several of the
sub-adults are recognizible and have been present all winter.
?
?? Northern Harriers have been conspicuous by their absence this year.?
Rough-legged hawks came early and in good numbers but have now all but gone.?
Great Cormorants are getting into breeding plumage and in addition to their
white flank-patch many are now developing the classic "Paulie Walnuts" silver
frosting=2
0to crown feathers.
?
?? I have not seen any Golden Eagles this year. In a typical season tally of the
previous 5 seasons we'd see 2-4 Goldens during the winter.
?
? The above report covers the area of the CT River from Essex north to Gillettes
Castle and all these sightings were observed from?the eagle?boat tours on the
river.

3/7 a quick afternoon look at a few spots in Old Saybrook and Niantic yielded
the following:

11 canvasback
1 no. pintail

100+ bufflehead
100+ mallard and black duck
South Cove, in Fenwick area, Saybrook - 6 BONAPARTE'S GULLS in with 15

A cackling
goose is among about 50 Canada geese this morning (10:30 AM) on
the Trap Falls Reservoir in Shelton. This bird has the silver/gray sheen, small
size, square head and stubby bill of a cackling goose.
Other waterfowl present are about 110 ring-necked ducks, 15 green-winged
teal and 3 bufflehead.
