Sat Mar 22 evening
Very interesting lecture from David Sibley. He explained his observation methods and drawing techniques. Wonderful talent.
Woodcock talk/walk from Ted Gilman. Heard/saw multiple calls and flights in the hawkwatch fields.
Thanks to Audubon for the venue.

With MOB The Greater White-fronted Goose was present on the south side of
Whirlwind Hill Road in Wallingford just before Pistapaug Pond. Also somewhat
poor views of a likely Cackling Goose found by Jason Rieger.

I don't know who was startled more, the woodcock or me! We also saw a
yellow-rumped warbler, Carolina wren, fox sparrow, downy woodpecker, red-winged
black bird, ring-billed duck, hooded merganser, mallard, and plenty of grackles,
and starlings.

Of local interest, a drake Gadwall is on Bishop's Pond in Meriden.

Spent some time this afternoon at Sherwood Island, Westport. No odd geese were
found, but there was a Merlin over the beach and Gannets offshore. Most notable
was a FOY Mourning Cloak. At Nearby Compo Beach, we had some flyby Tree
Swallows. Lots of Goldeneyes and Oldsquaw in the choppy Sound.
Nice surprise when we returned home to Norwalk was a Woodcock in our very
suburban yard- last weekend we had one in the same place but thought that was a
fluke.

Before heading out to the COA meeting this morning, 'had a magnificent male
Pileated Woodpecker tearing into a tree in the front yard, allowing very close
and long observation.??
Later this afternoon, 'a FOY Eastern Phoebe at the Old Bethany Airport.? Also at
the airport, were three Killdeeer.? Two were observed back on March 2, when
there was still considerable amounts of snow.? They were found only small bare
patches of ground beneath the small pines.?
