Came home late this morning and my Mother reported seeing a black eastern squirrel being chased by a gray eastern squirrel. Just noted the black squirrel behind the house. The black squirrel is a melanistic subgroup of the Eastern Gray Squirrel. Not sure if I have seen a black squirrel in CT before. When I lived in NJ I would see them on the campus of Princeton University.

A black squirrel has been hanging out for the last year on Yale's Old Campus (bounded by College, Chapel, High, and Elm Streets). Must be something about college campuses. We've also had red squirrels over the years but not currently.

We had a black squirrel in our yard in Chester through November and
December - haven't seen it in a couple of weeks. It was so distinctive,
bounding through the back woods. Would only spend a short time under the
feeders, and ventured onto our deck only once. Not as sociable as the
grey ones, it seems.
I've seen black squirrels a couple of times - the first was about 30
years ago, in Essex. And then there was a colony of albino squirrels on
Baker Road in Chester for a few years. They're really neat; look like
Persian cats running through the trees.

About 70 years ago, Frank Stanley Beverage, founder of Stanley Home Products, introduced a handful of black squirrels to what is now Stanley Park, in Westfield, MA. They have spread from there. I have seen them as far as Amherst, MA. Some have crossed the Connecticut River. They are in Suffield, CT, and I have seen at least one in Enfield. Not all are pure black. Some mixed-bloods look rather strange.

There are black squirrels in Greenwich, at least around Brook Ridge Drive. I think these are populations connected to those in New York.

There is one, and maybe two. all-white squirrels at the Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby. We saw one when we visited in early December. and when we asked about it, were told it is not albino. Also a black squirrel there.

There is a handsome black squirrel who is a regular at the feeders at the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton.

I have seen over the years many colors of Eastern Grey Squirrel at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby CT. The most notable is the white one, but also black, brown, and gray with white guard hairs (this last combo was a known offspring of the white femal).
