For the last few years I had a pair of Carolina wrens in my yard. They were still here during the winter, but one didn't seem to survive the second cold snap, and the other one disappeared a short time later. No sign of any Carolina wrens since then.

I’ve seen Carolina Wrens near the Windsor Locks Canal Park. I usually bird around the grounds right before entering the park on Windsor Locks side, between the river and canal. There’s been at least one or two there regularly and saw one yesterday.

For six consecutive winters, Carolina wrens have wintered and then nested at our East Hampton property. This past winter however, we did not observe the wrens after the second cold snap, and no wrens are present now.

Same here in Oxford. I’m afraid that second cold snap did in the Carolina wrens.

We had a similar situation in our yard in Cheshire; we had a pair that disappeared after the prolonged cold snap.

In my experience this spring, the number of Carolina Wrens is way down. And Our pair from early winter have been absent in our yard for months.

We live further south (I think) than any of the previous responders. And fortunately, our Carolina Wren pair survived the winter and have been busy in our yard all spring. It’s probably due to location. But we also have a raised shed (about 1 foot) in the back of our property, which has a gravel bed under it and butts up against the stone wall where I believe they nest. That could have given them additional shelter and access to our feeders this winter.

It’s a shame that their numbers are down overall. And I’m not sure if they were affected worse in more northern states or (hopefully) less so in places further south than Connecticut.
