Two Ospreys were at work building a nest today on the cell tower near Goose Pond in southern Southwick. Hold on -- yes, it's in Massachusetts, but a glance at the map will tell you that lower Southwick really should be (and once was) part of Connecticut. In any case, the point is that these Ospreys have already made it all the way inland to the MA/CT line.

At the risk of prolonging a minor discussion, I checked the pronunciation of "fieldfare" today in the library resources of Westfield State University, where I teach English. Again, I could find no authority, British or American, that even mentioned "field-FAR" as an acceptable pronunciation; all show the name as rhyming with "air," "care" and "hardware." I am wondering if the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)indicators in some dictionaries, including the OED, have been misread--it's easy to do! Hope my interest in this recent question is not a distraction from more important birding concerns.

Many ducks at Aspetuck/ Hemlock Reservoirs
Around 1 this afternoon in Easton, 2 Pied-billed Grebes were along the Center road Fairfield side of the reservoir. On the way down Black Rock Tpke, 2 Black Vultures were flying over, and when I drove up toward Redding, there were around 50 Ring-necked Ducks, 20 Bufffleheads, a couple of Hooded Mergansers, about 5 Common Mergansers, and at least 4 American Wigeons. I didn't have time to use the scope, but them might have been more! Things are moving!

03/16/13 - Beacon Falls, Rimmon Hill Rd -- late afternoon; adult Bald Eagle in the farm field sloping down west of the rd, first seen flying very low and then landing. Gone when I returned half an hour later; by then there were half a dozen Killdeer.

think pine) trees.
Sounded like "sweet sweet sweet sweet" or "three three three three"

I was in Willimantic this morning to be interviewed about hiking and birding
on WILI. When I left the studio, 2 Black Vultures were flying across Main
Street. To think hour many miles and hours I spent trying to get one in CT
back in the 1990s! Now I see them everywhere and often. Got COA mentioned on
air a few times, so that's good too. An Eastern Phoebe was calling along Rte
32 heading out of town as well as a flyby Killdeer.
Did a late day into night hike at Walden Preserve in Salem last night under
the "Worm" moon, absolutely gorgeous night hike! At least 3 American
Woodcocks were displaying along the various forest openings. Might have been
more but I was listening to music for a lot of the hike.

3/27. Our male osprey returned on march 22; Female has not returned yet. Usually they arrive within a day of each other ; so I wonder how long the male will wait til he takes another mate
