Hiking in Nehantic. Just pished in a Barred Owl which buzzed me from
behind. Seems quite annoyed. Must be owlet/nest very near.

Dave, I have had 4 Barred Owls come in after pishing. Only owl species to do so.

I've had this happen probably four times in the past year. I stopped pishing while in conifer forests over the winter because it happened one too many times for my liking during a difficult winter for them. They might hear the pishing and think it's a mouse or vole.

Speaking, sort of, of creatures that have had rough winters, there are barely any chipmunks around. I saw one in my yard today for the first time in several weeks. Barred Owls appear to be working on a nice rebound. I know there are multiple hooting males within a mile or so of my house, and I had a pair of what I assume were territorial males calling back and forth in daylight on Sunday at McLean Refuge in Granby.

Most all the songbirds I've been seeing lately appear to be on territory as well. Perhaps the unsettled weather will drop some migrants into our area. We could use the rain, it's getting dry out there.

I'm in my 2nd spring here in North Madison and the bared owls are vocal. But strangley the calls are different every night where last year they were consistently the "Who Cooks For You" call. This year I have heard at least 6 different variations.

Jamie I'd have to agree on the Chipmunk numbers. I had zero chipmunks today
that I saw/heard, though I did hear scurrying twice that may have been
chipmunks. Today was the first day I encountered good numbers of
dragonflies, had about 6 species.

And I too, have noted several calling Barred Owls in Bethany.  It's a great change from those December CBC days of seeing the occasional disheveled, forlorn Barred Owl in some roost along the coast.  I'm glad to hear that they are back and hooting away at their usual haunts.

I've never pished-up a Barred Owl in the Spring/Summer, but I have stumbled upon them, roosting in broad daylight, with their back to me.
