This morning when I went out to put seed in my bird feeder here in Washington, CT I heard what I first thought was a dog barking and them realized it was perhaps an owl? Since it is still very icy here I did not go up our long driveway to investigate the sound, which sounded like it was coming from near our neighbors house further down the long driveway here to South Street. I do hear Barred Owls here and in the distant past Great Horned Owls.  Any thoughts on what this odd call could have been. It was fairly loud as my 95 year old Mother, who is hearing "challenged", also heard it while in the house.

When anyone hears an unusual bird sound, try to record it and share it with
others, for ID. Most "smart phones" have voice recording programs, and are
pretty good at recording bird sounds. Thanks, Tom Robben, Glastonbury

Hello David -

A few years ago just after dark I heard similar sounds which varied from what sounded like barks to an almost Canada Goose-like honk/drawl. Using a bright light, I finally located the source; a Great Horned Owl. It was very strange and I don’t know the purpose for that vocalization.

Perhaps that was your bird.

Hey John --

Inspired by Chuck's post I checked out all the sounds for the GHOW on the
Sibley iPhone app. They're mostly variations on the 5-hooter pattern but
check out the first female call recorded in Oklahoma if you have access. Or
the female calls recorded in NY on the Cornell site (
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Horned_Owl/sounds). They're odd
and the Cornell recording sounds goose-like as Chuck said but the recording
in the Sibley app by Bill Evans is quite different and more dog-bark-like.
Memory being what it is, after-the-fact ID of sounds is problematic, but
the recordings might help.

I have heard what sounded to me like a seal's barking from a Great Horned Owl, and I have been told that this call is given by the female.
