Hello!

New Train Tracker Features & API
Today we launched an update to CTA Train Tracker (sm) that includes a variety of new features, including improved stop finding/selection, user interface improvements, and two important features we think you're likely to be interested in:
  • Follow This Train (click on a train to see its upcoming stops)
Users can see when a given train will reach upcoming stops, up to twenty minutes down-route. (So when you decide which train you're boarding, you can track its progress and then estimate when you'll reach a destination station.
  • CTA Train Tracker Map
It's exactly what it sounds like: A map of where the trains are.

Don't worry—we haven't forgotten about you. In fact, we're excited to see what fun you might do with the underlying data. So, two notes:
  • We are pleased to announce we've just opened up a new Follow This Train API endpoint as part of the Train Tracker API family.
This allows you to query for arrival information associated with a specific train and provide similar information to what we've just added with this new feature. Note we'll be adding some more detailed info on possible errors, but didn't want to make you wait to start working with this new feature.
...and...
  • We are pleased to announce we're developing a train location API which will allow you to get location information about trains for your code project!
Also, we do understand that this is an exciting new feature lots of you have been waiting for, but we just need a little more time to finish the development on the accompanying API bits. We're sorry this isn't ready yet, but we do appreciate your patience while we put together something that'll be stable, documented and supported. It's just around the corner--please hang in there!

Red Line South Reconstruction
As you probably know, the Red Line South Reconstruction Project begins Sunday, May 19. The project will require temporary changes to service on the Red and Green Lines, which will last for five months. This, of course, impacts which routes call at a number of stations, so please be sure to update your apps to account for these important changes--particularly in stop lists that are by route.

To help, we've produced some supplemental documentation that reflects some of what'll be different for the extents of the project, as well as an advance, special 'L' stops CSV that reflects what stations will be served by Red and Green Line trains during the project (stations that will be out-of-service are removed from the file) in case it's helpful to you!

Let us know if you have any issues or questions about any of these--we'll do our best to help.

Thanks again for working with our data; happy coding!

I built something similar to your map last year.... I'm glad to see yours! Much better, not surprisingly!

mine - http://des.truct.org/ctalol/map.html
If anyone is curious about the code - https://github.com/eastein/ctamapper

I'd be interested to find out whether the CTA one does simple station position interpolation of the trains or if the CTA has added GPS to the trains.
