TORRINGTON, CONN. — Five Points Gallery presents three new exhibitions. In the Torrington Downtown Partners Gallery, Peggy Stosz’s paintings delve into abstraction, as she captures liminal spaces of water reflections. Richard Alan Cohen’s metallic photographs depict isolated wetland environments. The West Gallery features delicate and intricate hand-sewn monotype prints by Kathleen Schroeder. 

 

Waterworld - Torrington Downtown Partners Gallery

Peggy Stosz captures the complexities of nature by painting layers of transparent color and line to create kaleidoscopic water reflections. Beginning with a representational approach, Peggy delves into abstraction using complementary colors that promote movement and form. Through this exploration, she draws out objects or stories within the turbulent surfaces. Peggy states, “I’ve become fascinated by the distortions within reflections formed by the water’s surface. This introduces feelings of wonder and exploration that allow the viewer to become more involved in the meaning within.”

 

Silver Light - Torrington Savings Bank Gallery

Richard Alan Cohen photographs images of threatened wetlands in “beaver bogs" which reflect the fragility of the ecosystems, blending elements of art and science. Beavers, a keystone species, keep these bogs in existence. The images’ muted silvery color palette directly correlates with the limited spectrum that beavers perceive, allowing viewers to essentially see the same scenery through the eyes of a beaver. Printed on translucent gampi paper, backed with metallic leaf, the images reflect/glow in sunlight. Cohen uses this method to cement the images’ beauty in lieu of the threats of climate change by keeping their settings pristine, their surroundings otherworldly, their scale majestic. 100% of the artist's share of sales will be donated to the Friends of American and Peoples State Forest and the North Woods Land Conservancy where these images were taken. 

 

Paper, Ink, and Thread - West Gallery

Kathleen Schroeder’s paper-based works explore relationships with limited yet flexible materials. Using a monotype printmaking method, Kathleen captures the inherent structure of utilitarian fibers, creating detailed fingerprints of the intertwined fibers on Japanese paper.  She then hand-sews the prints into various compositions, cutting out the negative spaces or transforming the prints into three-dimensional forms/objects.  Combining the prints in larger compositions, she physically connects the printed fibers and their shared foundation. Kathleen states, “This cycle of refining my process and pushing boundaries is the core of my artistic practice and is rooted in finding personal connections between my thoughts and my art.” Recent works include three-dimensional paper installations and objects, including a pair of couture kimonos.

Five Points exhibitions and educational events are free and open to the public. There is no admission charge to the Gallery. All artwork is for sale.
