About the James Merrill House
James Merrill came to Stonington in 1954. Village life and the apartment at 107 Water Street, where Merrill lived with his partner David Jackson, inspired some of his most important work, including The Changing Light at Sandover. The first writers in residence came soon after Merrill's death in 1995.
Over 90 Merrill Fellows have visited since, staying in the poet's home, reading his books, and working on projects of their own. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. Thanks to Merrill's legacy it now belongs to the Stonington Village Improvement Association (SVIA) and is an ongoing inspiration for writers and poets around the world.
