“It Told Me to Name the Center of a Volume of Water” is an art exhibition featuring sculptures, drawings, paintings, and garments created by Elisha Brockenberry, Kellen Grissom, and Akeyé Hicks over the past several years. I brought them together for the unapologetic clarity of their visions and their ability to manifest beauty that feels deeply singular—at times candidly described as “based,” “alien” or aligned with the “minor” mode of art-making, as articulated by Chris Sharp in his 2017 essay Theory of the Minor. Each of the three artists has, whether recently or in the not-so-distant past, found themselves situated in the sometimes haunting, sometimes meandering, and often frustrating psychogeographic and literal landscape of Connecticut.
