Samuel Pintos is a Peruvian
figurative artist,
born in the city of
Lima. As an artist, he
has been interested in
exploring the
different emotional
and corporeal
responses of
individuals when
interacting with
others. His work
depicts thwarted
relationships,
loneliness, and the
cohabitation of
lovers.
"My
work explores
portraiture as a
space of emotional
transformation and
adaptation," says
the artist. "Through
the fragmentation of
the face, the
layering of
surfaces, and a
gestural
interpretation of
the human figure,
I represent internal
states connected to
the migrant
experience—not only
as physical
displacement, but as
a psychological
process of
reconstruction and
belonging.
"I use the human
face as a shifting
territory where past
and present coexist.
The fragmented
compositions reflect
states of
uncertainty,
assimilation,
resilience, and
emotional transition
that emerge while
inhabiting new
environments and
identities.
"Color and gesture
function as
emotional structures
rather than
descriptive
elements. Each
portrait becomes a
visual record of
internal changes
shaped by movement,
adaptation, and the
constant tension
between origin and
reinvention.
"Rather than
directly documenting
migration, Memories Beneath the Skin seeks
to translate the
silent emotional
imprint left by
displacement: the
memories, fractures,
and identities that
remain inscribed
beneath the skin."
Samuel Pintos is a Peruvian artist born in Lima and currently based in the United States. Working primarily in painting, and occasionally in printmaking and drawing, his practice explores portraiture as a site of memory, identity, and emotional transformation. Through fragmented faces, layered surfaces, and symbolic imagery, he investigates themes of migration, adaptation, belonging, and the psychological traces of lived experience.
Pintos studied at the National School of Fine Arts of Peru (2000–2005) and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the National University of San Marcos in 2013. He also attended the Painting Workshop Program at the Art Students League of New York. His work has been exhibited in Peru and internationally, including Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. His artworks are held in private collections and have been featured in various publications.
His current body of work examines the emotional imprint of migration and the ways identity is continuously reshaped through memory, displacement, and adaptation.
