i have a private and a societal response:
private response:
you will lose your job four times in your career. plan for it.
anticipate it. save for it. use that "down time" to reflect on
creative ways to reinvent yourself and what you do.
societal response:
there *used* to be a "jobs migration" argument offered to anyone
worried about folks being displaced by new technologies:
- if farming jobs in primary industry disappeared, folks could move
to the secondary sector
- if manufacturing jobs in secondary manufacturing disappeared, folks
could move to the tertiary sector.
- if tertiary jobs in the service industry disappeared, well.... i
guess you are screwed.
now the world has changed. as technologists in that world, it behoves
us to reflect over the consequences of those changes. for more on that
see (e.g.)
http://user.frdm.info/ckhung/b/sts/winner.html. read it all
or just search for "mechanical tomato harvester".
