APHA's Careers in Public Health E-newsletter

Bi-monthly e-newsletter covering the entire spectrum of public health
jobs and careers. This is an interactive newsletter designed to answer
your public health career questions.

From the editor

So... How'd you get your job?

I often talk with people who are beginning the job hunt - and
wondering how on earth they're going to find someone to hire
them. Does anyone actually get a job by applying to those online
listings? Do you have to have connections? Can networking really
help?

The answers are yes... no... and absolutely! For this issue
of the newsletter, I gathered real-world stories of the job hunt
from four public health professionals I've met in my own
recent work. They all have jobs they're passionate about, and
they agreed to share how they got there.

Nanette Yandell is involved in research that will improve the safety
and efficiency of emergency medical care for kids. She just finished
her MPH this past August, and it only took her a month to find a great
public health job. How'd she do it? Nanette had been gathering
work experience since she was an undergrad. "As an undergrad, I
worked for the California Center for Rural Policy, conducting multiple
research projects, talking to policy officials and key community
leaders, analyzing data and writing reports." Read

Catherine Kroll is an epidemiologist who tracks disease outbreaks,
helps plan for prevention and keeps an eye on quality measures for a
county health department. She says it's just the right job for
her interests and skills. How did she find such a good match -
and just as she was finishing her public health training? Sometimes,
networking is the key. "I went straight from earning a
bachelor's degree in microbiology to graduate school for an
MPH." Read more >

Mervyn Chambers used to have a career that was completely unrelated to
public health. Now he's keeping an eye on both clinical and
public health services for the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, making sure
that this American Indian community's health is in good hands.
How did he get there? He shared how volunteering and being open to
possibilities put him on the right career path. Read more

Mel Melmed had barely finished graduate school when she found a job as
a public health nurse at a county health department, and now
she's leading the formation of a health department and managing
a major public health grant on an American Indian reservation in
rural Washington. What skills did she use to land the jobs she wanted?
In addition to experience and networking, she honed in on the
practicalities of the job search. Read more >

Did you know?

The largest growing public health concern in the world is diabetes. In
2006, according to the World Health Organization, at least 171 million
people worldwide suffer from diabetes. It's increasing rapidly, and it
is estimated that by the year 2030, this number will double.
