JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Community Health Organizer
Position Summary:
The Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) seeks a highly motivated and
passionate individual to serve as its Community Health Organizer under
the organization's health program area. The Community Health Organizer
will engage students, parents, and community-partners in advocacy toward
increased access to safe spaces for participation in physical activity,
healthy food options and the elimination of health hazards.

The Community Health Organizer*s project includes, but is not limited
to, overseeing the community organizing component of the JUGAR
Initiative, which aims to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by
increasing access to safe, attractive recreation spaces at specific
schools sites in the communities that ABC works in. The Community Health
Organizer will be responsible for engaging and developing relationships
with parents and students that will enable efforts to organize for
change in order to address the immediate and unique needs of each
community.
Organization Overview:
In 2000, a coalition of concerned Latino leaders created ABC as a
result of a shared desire to establish a mechanism that responds to and
shapes Latino policy in Los Angeles so that our community experiences a
rewarding and healthy quality of life. The mission of the Alliance for a
Better Community is to promote equity for Latinos in education, health,
economic development and civic engagement for the betterment of the Los
Angeles region.
Major responsibilities:
1. Develop strategies to engage parents, community members, and other
key stakeholders around health issues in Los Angeles.
2. Engage relevant school leaders, parents, students, and
community-based organizations to build substantial community capacity
around health issues.
3. Develop necessary outreach and engagement materials to increase
residents' capacity to address community health concerns.
4. Develop a Health Taskforce made up of community members to identify
and advocate for critical health concerns on and around school campuses.

5. Facilitate Health Taskforce meetings to increase community
understanding of health policies.
6. Build strong relationships with community members to develop leaders
who can advocate for and provide input on strategies for healthy change
and healthy living.
7. Represent community interest at key stakeholder meetings by
thoughtfully articulating parent concerns, suggestions, and views
regarding healthy communities.
8. Implement and continuously assess the impact of all health-related
training and community meeting materials.
9. Actively participate in and contribute to the organization's health
strategy via staff meeting participation and one-on-ones with the
organization*s leadership team.
10. Provide support to other organizational priority projects as
needed.
Qualifications:
1. Education: Bachelor*s degree preferred but not required
2. Contextual Experience: Minimum of two years experience organizing
and working with parents and/or community groups. Must understand the
importance of health to the overall well being of a community.
Understanding of health policy preferred.
3. Community Knowledge: Substantial knowledge of the Latino community
in Los Angeles and particularly of the community of Boyle Heights and
Pico-Union including: demographics, landscape, assets, and needs.
4. Leadership Skills: Effectiveness in organizing and investing adults
and students around a central initiative.
5. Team Building Skills: Able to demonstrate leadership on projects by
working independently. Must also be able to work within a team
environment and work collaboratively to accomplish common goals and
objectives.
6. Communications Skills: Superior interpersonal, verbal and written
communication skills, able to communicate in both Spanish and English
(required), basic Microsoft Office skills.
Salary: $38,000 to $48,000 per year
