Hi all,

In addition to the exciting news last week that the MDE CS Specialist position has been posted, I'm also very excited to share that the new course developed by the Minnesota Department of Education and the Northern Lights Collaborative is now available!

The Computer Science for Every Classroom: A Course for Minnesota K–12 Educators is linked from the MDE Computer Science webpage. A copy of the course summary and link to enroll is below. The course was developed to be useful and accessible for educators with all levels of experience in CS, from none to many years. The course can be completed asynchronously as an individual or can be completed as a group (e.g, a district PLC).

Since there are many educators in Minnesota who may be interested in CS, but not yet on the CSTA-MN email list, we encourage you to share this within and beyond your schools.

Thanks,

Jen

Computer Science for Every Classroom: A Course for Minnesota K–12 Educators

This professional development module was developed as part of the Computer Science Education Advancement Program (Minn. Stat. 120B.241 [2024]). This is a virtual course for K–12 teachers with a variety of experience levels in computer science and/or computer science integration, from no experience to experienced. The course should take about 10 hours to complete and includes lessons, activities, discussions, quizzes, and many educator and classroom resources. The course consists of eight modules aligned to the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) Standards for Computer Science Teachers. The course supports the development of effective K–12 CS educators by developing their skills and pedagogical understanding in order to provide equitable and effective CS instruction to all students. The three primary goals of the course are to develop a deep understanding of computer science content and pedagogy, to cultivate an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all students, and to design and implement engaging and effective CS learning experiences. The course can be completed individually or as part of a team. The Professional Learning Community (PLC) Facilitator Guide can help lead a group of educators through the course providing pacing and meeting format suggestions, supplemental resources for deeper learning, and hands-on PLC activities. You can enroll in the course on the Canvas Learning Management System.
