Hi Everyone!

I'm going to be teaching a full year Java class for the first time next year. Although I programmed in Java 15 years ago, I'm guessing I'm at least a little rusty so I've been looking around for curriculum, ideas, and pedagogy for teaching it. I started to take a look at  AP CSA curriculums, such as CSAwesome. However, I also heard about the Pathfinders Summer Institute.

Does anybody, who teaches/has taught Java, have any experience with the Pathfinders Summer Institute? Would you recommend taking it? What did you find the benefit of taking it vs. using the (free) CSAwesome curriculum along with joining the CSAwesome group?

Also, if anybody has any suggestions / recommendations for teaching Java, please let me know. I'm starting to gather resources for next year.

Thanks in advance! I hope the last stretch of a challenging year is going smoothly for all of you and you're able to look forward to summer.

Hi,

I would recommend using other platforms such as code.org or Amazon Future Engineer program with FREE curriculum, ideas, and pedagogy for teaching. If you have questions, reach out by email at ama...@projectstem.org

I hope this helps. Take Care!

The Pathfinders SI are terrific - all sorts of different curriculum providers to choose from and, at least before the pandemic, these SI brought in teachers from everywhere to one place for a week. Imagine the after hours! I used CS Awesome for the first time this year, since I needed a more fully online curriculum. The students enjoyed it, and the units map onto the College Board units. I did supplement with other labs and projects.
No matter which curriculum you adopt, or if you build your own, I would recommend a PSI because you will meet so many creative and helpful teachers. That's one reason. Also, CS Awesome has a ton of teacher support material - if you just use it on your own like I did this year, then the support material won't be second nature to you. (There's so much there, but diving into it was like diving into another course for me and I often didn't take the time.) If you attend an institute you will become very familiar with the teacher resources.

I agree with Shawn! Taking PD in our community results in deep learning and builds your network. I've attended Pathfinders and yes, you will find it extremely valuable!
