=/\= Ready Room, USS Messina =/\=
Instead of staying on Versailles, Ed decided to finish up his meetings
regarding the Second Synonian Hegemony on the Messina, seeing that he
needed to check on something. Which meant that his Deputy, along with
Chara, would be holding the fort down at Versailles. Sitting behind
his desk, Ed waited for Arkan to enter, he was looking over some maps
near Cestus and the Federation/Gorn border. Usually, that border was
quiet with a few ship movement noted on either side, but within the
past two weeks there had been lot of Gorn movement near the corner
that bordered all three empires (Federation, Klingon and Gorn).
Arkan showed up a few minutes later, holding a padd in one paw, and
clearly looking unhappy and worried. He straightened his posture some
as he walked inside the ready room, and quickly took in his
surroundings. The Hirumarian didn't really understood the need to
finish the meetings in the Messina, but that was the Admiral's
prerogative after all. Yet the command facilities of Versailles were a
more obvious place to be for the commander of the fleet in his
opinion. Though, none of this may matter soon, anyway.
"Admiral," he said with a nod, as a matter of greeting. "Preparations
are going as scheduled, and Intelligence reports that things seemed to
have stalled for the moment inside Synonian territory. The calm before
the storm, I guess."
"Sorry for having the meeting on the Messina but I'm preparing to
leave for small re-activation assignment just outside of Cestus III. I
just wanted to talk with you before I left while I'm gone your going
to be the one making the decisions." Ed said looking at Arkan, "keep
an eye on the First Force team leader and Versailles XO I feel that
things are going to be a little tense between the two of them."
"Cestus?" said Arkan, his round feline ears perking up. "Are the Gorns
acting up again?" he asked. "I already have my eyes on them both, Sir.
I think that everyone at the meeting saw that the relations between
those two were not the best. I must say that the announce that the FF
team leader held a rank in the Gala'e was quite surprising, and a not
a very good surprise. Even StarFleet Security didn't knew about
that..."
"Not sure but there's been some big movement on are borders. But I'm
sure it's nothing." Ed said rubbing his forehead. "Yea that's a
shocker but amazingly enough it's not the weirdest thing and it does
give us some advantage."
"I hope that you're right..." he replied, his whiskers twitching as he
scrunched his muzzle in a grimace. Obviously he wasn't convinced that
this would really be an advantage. "And I hope that StarFleet Command
will believe you as well. You know how they are with everything
Romulan..." He paused and scritched at his furry snout. "I wanted to
speak with you about another matter... This," he said as he slid his
padd on Ed's desk.
"Is this serious?" he asked, sounding puzzled. The padd was displaying
one of the last decisions from the Federation Council, which cut
StarFleet's budget down 80%. "Do they want to mothball us and offer
the Federation in sacrifice to the rest of the galaxy?"
"Unfortunately it is prior to getting here I double checked it
myself." Ed said rubbing his face, "this is not a great time to be
this high up in the food chain." He added with a small laugh, "so at
some point we need to figure out what we need to do to work with what
we've got. But for now let's stick with what we've planned on doing."
Arkan nodded. "The ships sent to the convoy are being loaded up as we
speak, and should be able to depart shortly. The shuttles that the
First Force Team will be using has been slightly modified to make less
easily seen on sensors. That should buy them some time. Of course, if
they find a large military force in the system, they won't last long,
but let's hope they won't and won't need to call in the
reinforcements. Last thing we need is a new war on our hands."
Ed nodded, "also as for the First Force if they do get caught we
disavow any knowledge of this mission." Ed said looking at Arkan with
a serious look on his face knowing that this could have disastrous
consequences from two powers near the Federation.
"Of course, Sir, I'm sure they'll believe us," replied the tall feline
with a tone of slight playful sarcasm, though his face quickly became
more serious. "Though I hope we won't have to disavow that mission.
But, should that be the case, I already prepared a plan to quickly
redeploy a few ships to the frontier, just in case our neighbors get
thinking about a show of force."
"Good make sure this plan get's ran by Commodore Howe seeing how he's
the fleets StratOps officer." Ed said with a small grin knowing that
it was going to be tougher and tougher to front all four quadrants.
"Yes, Admiral," replied the Hirumarian.
