> Everything began with the Birmingham University and Richard Hoggart. Perhaps earlier, with Raymond Williams. Then came Balamohan Thampi, people came for census to his house, not recognising him as the former VC. A broad and short introduction by the course co-ordinator. Then our Josco, I mean Jose co-ordinator and our beautiful Swapna madam, as her name indicates, a dream beauty, our cocoa. Then came Madhu sir with his cultural studies. What I liked was his ringtone. The phone rang in between and it was so sweet. I have now downloaded that flute music and put it as my ringtone, "Govardhana Giridhari". So much for his class. Then there was the magical Jayaram sir with his two sessions over two days which yet seemed so short. The Kathakali performance was superb and the handsome and graceful Kannan attracted many lady hearts. Then there were some women's magazines mostly 'read' by men. A race on racial studies. Meena Madam with her Women and Film would have wanted to flee with her car by tea break, but you know, force of circumstances made her continue. Two jokers got away with two whole days and eight thousand bucks before anyone could understand what was happening. Bajaj Pulsar dts i shaped like something and Respect. I played Respect continuously and Pawar sir shouted at me. Narayan Chandran wants to ask ID card of the Police and of the Indian President. Nice guys to mess up with. Raghavan Payyanadan was fortunate to be part of the group photo. Ansari just escaped being beaten up for some nonsense which made sense to him. Indugopan was one person who spoke what he knew rather than what other authors have said. Jameela Madam was smiling and sweet with her diaspora. Rajeswari madam performed her theatre mathematically. Raveendran sir made Bakthin go slow so that I could make some notes on his talk. Murali sir raised some eyebrows with his queer theory. Vayala sir declared war against war. Dr. Joy Philip came to treat us of the illnesses we contracted by sitting for 21 (or 22 I still don't know) days in class. Everything was wound up with a beautiful demonstration by Neena Prasad: yetho hastha tatho drishti, yetho drishti tatho mana, yetho mana thatho bhava, yetho bhava thatho rasa. And of course Kattakkayam turned Chittakkayam, putting us all into the kayam (turbulent waters) of hartal.
> And what to say of the participants beginning with the Kalidasa, the sruthi, the smruthi, the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Mahabharatha. Yes, you are right. It is none other than our great Subash sir. The trouble is that we had a Maoist from Assam, Dr. Sanjib Sahoo with his Bihu dance, which attracted our Uma Madam so much that she made a mention of it in every possible occasion. He kept alive all the discussions with his knowledge of Indian and World History. I was surprised why no one asked, ok, I will sit there, you come and take the class. Sanjibji, Moi tuma phaal phom. The back benchers switched off the lights and went to sleep. Some others switched on their mobiles and watched I don't know what. Vani miss was all attention and took notes of all classes and even project presentations. The only time I saw her not taking notes was during Josco's presentation, I don't know why. Mini miss looks above her glasses to the 'Resource Persons' (why are they called that) and gives a very studious look. For Lakshmi Miss it does not matter whether it is this way or that way. Jasmine Miss is torn between two worlds, Kerala and Goa, but she has learnt something, how to make ulli theeyal. I hope she is properly advised. Ramanathan sir locked horns with everyone and made amends later, because the snacks were all very tasty. Sobhana miss went on taking photos but we haven't still seen a piece of it to this day. Vijila madam is attentive when everyone is asleep and sleeping in the most interesting classes. Mane sir is a gentle'mane'. Sanil Raj sir asked Hariharan sir what flimsy thing have you done and Hari sir got the shock of his life. We saw the funeral of Kamala Das on screen and that of Hari sir in the classroom. Now you know why people are unwilling to take classes for refresher courses. Reports say that they are caught unawares, packed in sacks and delivered at the Academic Staff College. Divya miss got sick even without sitting in many classes. How can one forget the beautiful song of Sindhu Miss, "Tere bina zindagi mein koi...shikva...to nahi...shikva nahi..". I miss you Miss. There were people who were mostly silent sufferers like Sneha Miss, Deepa Miss, and Ramajeyalakshmi miss. Given a chance, Muniyandi sir could speak on anything. I am grateful to Sajitha miss for providing the revenue stamp and that too without accepting the one rupee that I offered. Uma miss's poems and songs still ring in my years. Thanks to Prabha Miss for the beautiful paintings of Raja Ravi Varma.
