SECOND CHURCH OF CHRIST SCIENTIST
At a tightly scripted Sunday service, where even the homily was read
verbatim from the writings of founder Mary Baker Eddy, about a dozen
congregants at Salt Lake City's Second Church of Christ Scientist were
urged to meditate on the mystery of life.
"Life is neither in nor of matter," First Reader Anne Collier read
from Eddy's text. "What is termed matter is unknown to spirit, which
includes in itself all substance and is life eternal. Matter is a human
concept. Life is divine mind. Life is not limited."
In keeping with that teaching, congregants were advised never to
"record ages."
"Chronological data are no part of the vast forever," Collier read
in a soothing monotone. "Time-tables of birth and death are so many
conspiracies against manhood and womanhood . . . Man, governed by
immortal mind, is always beautiful and grand."
