hey it is not at all necessary to do LL.B with CS. this is only the person wish to have additional degree along with it unless and until it is their main profession.

people do CA along with CS , some also do M.Com so it is just your desire to have additional qualification.

Dear Nisha,

Definitely it is not mandatory to do LL.B. along with CS, but somehow it has become a norm or you can call it a practice which people are following in order to have good job prospects.

As, this assures to the Employer that the employee would be able to understand and handle matters under various laws.

Rupal

Dear Nisha

Doing LL.B is not must and should, however almost everyone are doing these days the reasons are....

1. Employers will look for a CS with additional qualification like CA / CMA / LLB / MBA as secretarial work will not be there everyday or even if it is there it will be limited ( however this depends on the size of the Company / no. of group companies..... )

2. No Company will have regular corporate actions like Buy back, mergers, amalgamations, takeovers, bonus issues, rights issues...... all these are event based. ( Again this depends on size of the company, type of industry...... )

3.So Companies will look for a CS with preferably LL.B so that he / she can handle both secretarial and legal functions as a Company will have so many legal issues to deal with, so employers feel that LL.B degree will give you the edge to handle all those legal functions

So LL.B with CS is like a DOUBLE EDGED SWORD.

Having said all this there are successful CS who flourished with CS Qualification alone be it practice or in employment

So it is always better to have at least one additional qualification in this competitive world.

It is my personal opinion, it is your call at the end of the day

All the Best

Regards

Dear All,

I endorse with the views expressed by my professional collegue Mr. Sirish. The role of a Company Secretary has undergone a change many folds in the recent past and today he is called upon  to take care of the legal functions of a Company. In this aspect LLB is an added advantage and the chances of one's employment also increase by doing LLB as companies prefer candidates with legal background.

Companies prefer one person who is a professional in terms of Legal and secretarial matters of the Company. In case of  companies which are big in size, LLB is inevitable as you have to deal with the legal issues of the Company independently and further to this you have to interact with the lawyers of the Company. So during this interactions LLB knowledge is very handy and important. As a Company Secretary you are better placed to interact with eminent lawyers and understand the questions of law and facts involved in the case.

This is my personal opinion and the decision whether to do LLB or nor is left to one's absolute discretion. I  would request our other members also to contribute their constructive opinions/suggestions to this important debate.

Thanking you,

Best,

CS Lalit Kumar T.

Dear All,

I have to say that CS along with LLB is a very deadly combination. There is no doubt about the fact that CS is a complete code by itself. But CS along with LLB, adds and creates value.

One has to remember that in this dynamic environment, its very important to prove your worth day in and day out. Hence, a Company Secretary along with a legal portfolio is very important.
