We would like to start a Sigma Pi Sigma chapter at CSM. Sigma Pi
Sigma is the physics honor society, you can learn more about the
national organization at www.sigmapisigma.org. Here are the basics:

1. We need to decide on membership requirements with the help of our
Department Chair and the Sigma Pi Sigma advisor.
2. We need to prepare an induction ceremony (as casual or formal as
we desire), with the details of the induction ceremony reported to the
national office at least five weeks BEFORE the ceremony.
3. Membership fees for new SPS/Sigma Pi Sigma members is $45, and
membership fees for current SPS members are $25, along with proof of
National SPS membership.
4. Sigma Pi Sigma is a lifetime membership. You will receive stoles
to wear at graduation as well as a certificate, card, and lapel pin.

I would like this thread to be suggestions for membership
requirements, and suggestions for the induction ceremony. Fire Away!

Here's what we came up with during the meeting:

What should Sigma Pi Sigma requirements be:
1. GPA of ~3.0 or some percentage of class rank - we could ask TBP
2. Some measure of SPS involvement - i.e. participation, leadership,
help with organization of volunteer activities, working a certain
percentage of events ea. semester

What should Sigma Pi Sigma members do:
1. Formal dinner about physics/sigma pi sigma for induction - perhaps
as a fundraiser
2. Professional development activities

I wasn't at the meeting, but I agree with those requirements. Having
both a GPA and SPS service requirement will ensure that not only are
the members "honor" (by virtue of grades), but they are also active
and involved. I think that a Sigma Pi Sigma member ought to
demonstrate both these traits.

I think another good activity for members (probably only a select few
members each semester) would be to travel to an APS meeting or Sigma
Pi Sigma (if they do have national meetings). Not only would this be
a nice experience for the members who get to go, but it would also
boost our visibility as a SPS/sigma pi sigma chapter, and allow for
networking.

Do we know of any issue with people being in multiple honor societies,
eg TBP and Sigma Pi Sigma?

I've done a bit of research and have not found anything about being in
multiple honor societies. For some people at Mines, it seems like a
competition to see how many you can have on your resume, I don't see
that being a problem.
