Subject: IC-IMPETUS 2014 - Student project competition

Dear Sir,

PESIT Bangalore South Campus is hosting an IEEE International Conference on the IMPact of E-Technology on US (IC-IMPETUS), a conference to recognize innovations in electronics engineering and computer science and IT that have made (or have the potential to make) an impact on our society.

The Conference is scheduled on January 10-11, 2014.

As this conference is meant primarily to inspire engineering students, a student project competition is being hosted on January 10, 2014. We have already had a rigorous review to shortlist the best entries for the competition. However, given the relevance of the work at CSIE for this conference, we would like to make provision for some participation from CSIE at this conference.

Towards this end, we request that 3-4 of the best projects from CSIE be selected for presentation at the Conference. Preferably the projects would be those that have a potential to make a big impact in any one of the impact areas listed below -
  • Agriculture
  • Biomedicine and Healthcare
  • Education
  • Environment and Energy
  • Rural development
  • Governance, Administration and Commerce
  • Safety and Security
Students presenting their project need not register for the Conference. They can attend all talks at the Conference.
Some of the speakers at this conference would be -

Mr. Lakshminarayan Kannan
, a serial entrepreneur, one of whose most notable contributions is Gramateller, a low-cost ATM for the rural poor. The Gramateller consumes as much power as a 70-watt lightbulb, with backup batteries and solar panels to keep it running, if the grid fails. This machine dispenses soiled notes without any fuss. More recently, he has developed Microspin, a technology enabled cotton spinning unit that has the ability to connect cotton farmers into the fabric value chain by making it easy, simple and cost effective to spin cotton into yarn - instead of bailing the cotton and sending it off to large spinning mills. Most of his work has been with NGO's, focussing on the rural poor; he has founded a number of not-for-profit entities such as the Sunbeam group of schools, Vortex Engineering, Centroid Design, Fractal Foundations, to name a few.

Dr. Anand Vinekar - currently a vitreoretina consultant at Narayana Nethralaya, completed his MBBS from St. Johns with a record of 17 gold medals! He is program director of KIDROP, one of the most successful public-private partnerships in Karnataka and the principal project lead for the Infant Blindness Prevention Program. His work has saved over 70,000 premature babies from blindness.

Dr. Pradeep Khosla - currently the Chancellor of UCSD, Dr. Khosla served as a Program Manager of DARPA, managing a $50 million portfolio of projects in real-time, embedded and distributed systems. His work has spans a wide area of subjects such as internet-enabled collaborative design and distributed manufacturing to software composition and reconfigurable software for real-time embedded systems and reconfigurable and distributed robotic systems. He has won several awards including the PAN IIT Academic Excellence Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the George Westinghouse Award for contributions to improve engineering teaching. He is a consultant to several companies and VC's and

And other stellar speakers such as Mr. Abhinandan T.D., the serial entrepreneur, Dr. S. Sadagopan, the Founder Director of IIIT-B and Mr. Mekin Maheshwari, President (Engineering) of Flipkart.

It would be a great exposure for the students to hear these people speak as well as the research and technology papers that will be presented during the course of the two-day event.

Students who would like to attend the Conference as delegates and collect a "Conference kit", can register by paying Rs. 1,800 (Rs. 1,500 for IEEE Student Members) through DD or wire transfer. Registration details are attached with this mail.

Details of the call for project presentations and about the conference are available at our website: http://icimpetus.pes.edu

Please would you let us know the number of teams (and an approximate number of students) who would be participating in the Conference by December 12, 2013? The students can send in details about their projects after their exams are completed.

We look eagerly forward to hearing from you soon,
Warm regards,
Gowri
