Fossil Free MIT
is excited to welcome Dr. James Hansen as the
final speaker of our Climate Change Speaker
Series. Dr. Hansen, formerly Director of
the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (a
position from which he retired to "focus more on
climate activism"), is Adjunct Professor at
Columbia University's Earth Institute, where he
directs a program in Climate Science, Awareness
and Solutions. Dr. Hansen is well known for his
1988 testimony on climate change to Congress that
helped raise broad awareness of global warming.
He is one of
the world's most prominent advocates of public and
political action against climate change and was
named one
of TIME
Magazine's 100
most influential people on Earth in 2006. Dr.
Hansen will
be discussing the realities of the climate crisis
and the opportunities for us to rise to meet them,
with a particular emphasis on the role and
responsibilities of our youth generation. For an
idea of what to look forward to, check out Dr. Hansen's popular TED Talk, "Why I
Must Speak Out About Climate Change".
Directly following the
talk, we welcome you to join us for an informal
reception with Dr.
Hansen in the Bush
Room (10-105). This event is f
ree
and open to the public. Learn more here, and
