I hope the beginning of November is treating you all well. I'm starting to disapprove of this cold already but it seems to make drinking hot chocolate more acceptable (rather than when I drink it in 80 degree weather).
I've got some announcements and revisions for community service events based on information that has come to my attention since the past meeting:
(1) Our first service day was a great success. This was with Little Friends for Peace in DC- we read books to the kids, played sports, helped with homework, did arts and crafts, and mentored. Come out again this Monday at 3:30 to support this wonderful group.THERE WILL BE AN EXTENDED VERSION OF THE EVENT THIS MONDAY (meaning that we will continue until 8:30 or 9 on-site so we won't get back until about 9:30 or 10). This means that IF YOU WANT TO COME LATE, YOU CAN. I recognize 330 may be difficult for some people so MJ has graciously agreed to stay late and find some kids in the neighborhood who want to hang out.
(2) If you were at the Community Service Meeting at the end of October, can you please send me your full name with your email? I have many of you signed-up for activities in November but no way to contact you about last minute event details because I was silly and forgot to make a list.
(3) TRANSPORTATION INFO: really important, I realized on the first day of service that meeting at the CSC for any event where we take the metro is silly. Most of us come from the other side of campus anyway/ from right near stamp and the bus for the metro only meets outside stamp. SO, from now on, for any event that involves taking the metro, the group will meet at the stamp bus stop. For November, this change includes (a) all the days for Little Friends for Peace and (2) Elder Buddies. Knights of Columbus Thanksgiving Baskets still meets at the CSC because Mike is driving. It looks like we may have more than one carload though for that event, so if you want you can take the metro individually to Forest Glen metro stop and walk to the center. ANY TIME WE ARE RIDING THE METRO- BRING MONEY (usually about 5 or 6 dollars should be enough but maybe bring extra just in case).
(4) TIME CHANGE- the pick-up for students who want to ride in Mike's car for the Thanksgiving basket prep on the 21st has been moved from 6:45 am to 6:25 am. This is just so you can get there by 7 and be ready to go. Sorry it's early but it's for a good cause.
(5) BOOK DRIVE- now through the end of the semester, there is a book drive in the CSC for collecting old books (finally a place to get rid of those textbooks that the Exchange won't buy back!) The CSC gets $1 for every book donated and the rest of the proceeds go to Invisible Children and Better World Books (both wonderful organizations). The donation box is currently in the library. Thanks to Joseph M for running this program!
WHEW- sorry that was a lot. I enjoyed writing it as much as you enjoyed reading it :) BUT necessary info. I will try to update the calendar and newsletter with all this information soon as well. Hope to see all of you at events soon. THE GOAL IS TO HAVE EVERYONE DO ONE SERVICE PROJECT A MONTH! So that means you, yes YoU, must come out. Send me an email with your name, email, phone number, and date of service and I'll put you on the list.
Love and Peace,
