Hi, Anne and all,
Opening Higher Maya version scene file to a lower Maya version scene file:
1. Save your Maya scene file as an ascii scene file (.ma) using Maya 8.5 or higher.
2. Open the .ma scene file using a text editor such as Notepad on a Windows-machine or Text Editor on a Mac-based machine.
3. Use the Find tool in your text editor and enter the higher version of Maya (e.g., 8.5). Replace this version number with the lower Maya version (e.g., 8.5 to 7.0). You need to find every value to make sure things run smoothly.
4. Save your ascii file. Close out of text editor.
5. Open the lower version of Maya, and click on File>Open Scene. Navigate to the ascii file. If it is in your default "scenes" folder, then click the pull-down menu and choose Files of Type: mayaAscii("".ma).
6. Highlight your .ma file and open it in Maya.
7. Save your .ma file as a mayaBinary ("".mb) into a target location such as your scenes folder.
Now you will be able to work with your scene file using the lower version of Maya. You can open this .mb file in a higher version of Maya without any tweaking.
NOTE: If you have saved maya file in a higher version, then you may have some features that may not be supported in a lower version of Maya.
Hope this helps. - rr and jdh
