Hi, all,

I am planning on keeping this google group up and running under my
gmail account. I may change the name though and remove the cscie21
part under the group title....

Also, last night a group of us talked about taking an independent
study course with Tereza Flaxman. I am planning on emailing Dr. Henry
Leitner and Stephen Blinn to see if we can get the course approved for
the following: 1) course credit toward one of the ALM requirements,
e.g., video course requirement, 2) to have Tereza Flaxman count as one
of the Harvard Instructors for the ALM in IT/DAAS program/
concentration.

In the meantime I plan to write up/propose a syllabus emphasizing
Digital Moviemaking and Animation, where we would be learning about
preproduction/production/postproduction more in detail using Final Cut
Pro and/or After Effects, a digital sound application (native to the
OS or 3rd party), and continuing to learn a 3D computer graphics
application, in this case, being Maya. I will show Tereza Flaxman the
proposal and syllabus.

If you would like to be *removed* from this group, please let me know
and I will delete your membership from the group.

If you are interested in attempting to have this independent study
course focus on the above topic with Tereza Flaxman, then I will cc
you on the email thread with Dr. Leitner and Stephen Blinn.

Thanks so much. - Rise ;-)~

yes, I would be interested in such a study course and it would be grate if
it would be aproved for the IT/Digital media program as I am interested in
taking more courses in that area.

Yes I think that would be interesting. But there is no Final Cut pro price
brake for students, and the version 4 I have does not work on intel macs I
am told! It would be nice to use a software we can work with from home.

Hi, all,

I don't think that I can take the Independent study with Tereza since there is a video production course being offered this Spring. Just a heads up... If you still would like to study under Tereza, please email her directly at tfla...@fas.harvard.edu.

Hi,

I had a meeting with Stephen Blinn last week to discuss my program and the possibility of doing the independent study.  He said if Tereza agrees to have independent study class with us, it is just a matter of filling out some forms and get approved by Dr. Leitner.  However, we will need to be admitted to the ALM IT program first.  We will have to work out a schedule and define what we intend to achieve at the end of the semester.  I will check with Tereza to see if she is still interested in doing this.  I will also forward along the form when I get them from Stephen.

What classes are you all taking this semester?  I am taking E-7 and E-12.  E-7 is pretty interesting class.

Enjoy the new semester....  See you all around at school!

Wendy  :)

I am taking E75 which I need for work. web programming. I
have thought of sitting in on E-12 but I am not sure if I
would get much from the lectures. What do you think? Are the
lectures helpful or is it mostly practice and reading books?

I hope the projects will be fun, but I will miss taking a
creative class. I would love to work on maya this summer. I
want to continue maya this term but first I have to sift
through the mail and bills that accumulated last term! I
think there is still time to sign up for the ALM program so
I will do that.

I want to get a digital camera. I am curious if the
instructor will recommend a camera in your digital
photography course?

the best part is that I am going to france for 3 months. I
have to find caregivers for my mum, get dsl In france so I
can work from there etc and I will have to work on my final
project from there. But I look forward to it!

By the way, If anyone is going to France and would like to
stay at my place please let me know. My office mate went for
a week and really enjoyed it.

Hi,

I'm taking CSCIE-9, Computational Art and CSCIE-26 Video Production due to my requirements for the ALM. I plan to take the summer course CSCIE-26 2D Animation for Artists. These classes will help me with my thesis.

Anne, thanks for the France offer! Wow, have fun while you are there.... I'm around campus on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Good luck all. Take care. - Rise ;-)~

hi Rise, glad to see you are taking great classes.  I took E-9 last spring.  I LOVED it.  I am hoping to sit in it this semester, if they let me.  I will see you on Saturday-I am taking the video editing  class.

Hi Anne,
I don't think I would take E-75 looks like its a little more advance
for me at this point, but perhaps E-12. Are you taking something else?
I hope all is well! It's so exiting you are going to France! Have a
nice and easy going semester ;-)

Hi Anne,

I am taking E-12 online and the lecture video is not online yet last time I checked.  I will let you know how it is once I watch the lecture.  I have a feeling it is going to be a rather basic web development class.

The digital photography class is very interesting.  I don't think he will recommend any specific cameras though.  He did recommend some website for reviews and research.  What kind of camera are you thinking of getting?  He talked about those with manual mode and support raw picture format and SLRs with interchangable lens.  I might be buying one too.  If so, I will let you know what I find.

The France trip sounds exciting.  Are you going there for work?

In terms of Maya, I would like to do it during the summer too.  Will keep you posted.

Hi Rise/Sholen,

What is the video production class for this semester?  I can't find CSCI E-26 on the schedule.  Will this fulfillment the DV requirement?  I am interested in looking into this too.

Thanks, Wendy  :)

Hi Wendy

Yes I think the web course will be more basic than the
course I am taking. I will try to find someone who has the
lecture slides. That should be enough for me to see what he
thinks is important for people to know.

I used to like 95% of my pictures with my SLR. With the new
point and shoot, 20%. I have been so disappointed each time.
Basically most of the pictures are blury. The camera was not
aimed at the right place, the person was moving... I never
had trouble when I set the focus myself. I would get what I
had seen.

Maybe I should look to see if there is a small digital
camera that lets you set the focus yourself!

I am going to France to be in France. If my boss has work
for me to do, I will be working and have the final to do
there. But I will also take some time off.

Hi, Wendy,

The video course will fulfill the video requirement. http://www.extension.harvard.edu/2007-08/courses/22659.jsp?caller=dce

it is an intro to video post-production. i've never taken the first class, so it will be interesting to see how it goes...

Hi Jouliana,  I do not have the book.  It just got published.  I hear it is good.  I have not seen it yet.  Please sign up quickly before they cancel this fabulous class due to low enrolment.

Hey Anne,
Check out this camera that lets you set the focus manual.  This website also has reviews on many cameras.
If you are interested in trying this camera, you can actually loan it from the front desk at 53 Church Street.
Have fun!

HI

It may be only for your class, but I will see if I can
borrow it.

The minuteman has the nov consummer report on line, with a
minuteman card
in the academic one file database.

I have not really had time to think about it. Did you make a
decision?

Hey Anne,

Yes, I have made my decision.  The camera loan policy from school is only for 24 hours per loan.  I don't think that would be enough time for me to do my homework well so I have decided to get my own.  I dropped almost $900 yesterday getting a Canon EOS 400D package which comes with 5 lens, tripod, flash cards, digital flash, etc.  It is a very nice package but that is a lot more than what I really want to spend.  I will probably get it later this week or early next week.  Will let you know how it works out.  There are other good alternatives, like Nikon D40X, Pentax 100D, and Sony Alph 100.  The dpreview.com website has many in-depth reviews.

I am thinking of offering a course in 3D animation to mid
school or high school girls in the town where I will be in
France

Alice from CArnegie Mellon
http://www.alice.org/

It looks like I should be able to figure it out, and offer
it as a group activities. Anyone has heard about it?

That would be fun!

Joulianna and I are currently enrolled in CSCIE-9 that uses Processing, a software tool that has 3D libraries such as OpenGL.

Hi Ann,

When are you going to be in France?  I am looking to buy tickets to Paris, May 26th-June 5th.  I hope the prices would go down!  How long will you be there?

Last year, I think, the computational art guys were talking about such tools.

Cheers,
