Gaurav will be doing a winch clinic this Saturday after dinghy lessons (thanks Gaurav!) (students/new members, this is an easy way to get volunteer hours).  This is when we take them apart, clean up the old grease and salt buildup, and re-oil/grease them.  We try to do it twice a year, or we start to get winch failures while sailing.

It's a pretty easy job (no experience in anything is necessary), but one that scales really well with having more people.  It's also one of the few boat maintenance tasks that literally involves hanging out in the cockpit on a nice day chatting and drinking your beverage of choice.  And it's a good way to get more familiar with our keelboats and learn how a winch works, which any keelboat you sail will have.  So come on down to J-dock to help if you can.  If you don't have a dock key, hang out at the top of the ramp, we'll keep an eye out for people and come let you in.

We also need some people who have done this before that might be able to help show others the ropes.

Seniors!: If you aren't familiar yet with servicing a winch, please try to make this one.  This is a fairly basic skill and can turn taking another boat or abandoning a sail into a 15-minute delay.

Aspiring Seniors: We may be implementing a keelboat rigging test, and disassembling a winch and cleaning/greasing it and putting it back together might be part of it.  So if you haven't done one of these yet, come down if you can.  The goal is to do these clinics twice a year so if you can't make this one you'll have more chances.

Cheers,
Ryan
