I noticed when saving high-passed images (original - gaussian filtered), some details are lost when using imwrite(im, 'im.jpg'). It looks like the overal contrast of the picture is much worse than displaying in matlab using imagesc. Below first is imagesc in matlab, second is imwrite:

You can use mat2gray to change the scale range so that when you save you will see the whole range…

Thanks, that solved it. Also I realized the images are black since I didn't convert them to double.
