Announcement of IITBombayX course: 'Basic 3D animation using Blender', SKANI101x

Dear Teacher and Learner,

Animation for online learning is developing rapidly, as most of the traditional education is moving towards eLearning. However, there is a lack of trained professionals to execute it, owing to many challenges, such as:

  • Lack of formal curriculum and certification: A handful of National Universities offer these courses, however their intake is very less. The courses offered by other Institutes are hardly certified by a competent and recognised university. Thereby the credibility of the students who take these courses is at stake.
  • Lack of curriculum for educational animation: Most of the available animation education is targeted towards entertainment industry. However, the reality is that, there is a growing demand for animation professionals specifically for the eLearning content creation industry.
  • Use of proprietary software: Most of the software packages prescribed in these courses are proprietary, which limits the access for the students to practice. In addition, this promotes piracy, which is unethical.

In order to address these gaps, there is a specific need to have a formal curriculum based on free/open source software. We are offering a new course titled 'Basic 3D animation using Blender', on this platform. The course duration is 8 weeks, wherein the participant is expected to devote 3-4 hours of his/her time per week. The earlier offering of the same course has been a success, and more than 85% of the participants have rated it high on engagement. The lead instructor is Dr. Sameer Sahasrabudhe, who has an experience of teaching Blender for the last 7 years. He and his team have so far conducted more than 35 workshops on Blender animation.

This mail is to invite other students to register for this free online course. On successful completion of this programme, participants will be able to apply the skills like modeling, animation, lights, textures, and materials to create a short animation clip on their own. Students completing the course with a minimum grade, will also get an honour code certificate.

Register on IITBombayX https://iitbombayx.in/ for further details.

Please disseminate this information to potential students in your institute or other colleges. You can also forward the attached poster for the same. Tentatively, the course will start in the second week of February 2016. A formal announcement will follow soon. Registrations will start from January 26th 2016.

Thanks and warm regards,
Deepak B. Phatak
