INVITATION TO CMSC 2018

Event:             The 4th Creative Mathematical Sciences Communication conference (CMSC).

Website:         www.cmsc.nz

Where:            Hosted by The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity. 182 Eastern

Hutt Road, Taita, Lower Hutt, Wellington.

When:             21st - 23rd July 2018. Full program details on the website soon.

‘Everything Mathematical can and should be intuitive, hands-on and understandable by 10 year olds’.

Join this unique event, a Computer Science Conference hosted by an Art Academy. The CMSC is a gathering of professionals who aim to extend the boundaries of maths/computational thinking through art and hands-on activities, dance, theatre, and more. This year they will present their research through a series of participatory workshops and presentations.

The CMSC aims to expand the relationship between mathematics and art. Every creative step can be examined as a series of extraordinary mathematical steps upon which the opportunity for innovation awaits. Invited are teachers, researchers, students from all fields from Maths, Science, Engineering, Visual arts and Theatre. The CSMC aims to be inclusive, academically accessible to anyone interested in the relationship with the future of Maths and creativity.

We will explore new ways of communicating mathematical sciences, focusing on algorithmic and computational thinking. The impulse is to build on materials and activities such as Computer Science Unplugged (www.csunplugged.org). The CMSC 2018 is special because it is being hosted at New Zealand’s leading art institute, The Learning Connexion (TLC). We will be in the company of the institute’s artists as we explore the possibilities.

If you’re an artist, is it possible that you are also a brilliant mathematician who happens to use a different set of instruments to calculate? Or, are you a scientist or mathematician with a natural eye for aesthetics and wondered where that comes from? This is a unique opportunity to be a part of forum that could change education.  The sessions will include discussion of the future design of mathematical operations in schools.  We’ll explore collaborative opportunities between polarising disciplines.

The CMSC will be hosted by The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity - its building exteriors hand-painted by graduate Sue Lund providing a colourful backdrop to the event. The Learning Connexion prides itself as a space where traditional and non-traditional creative processes are nurtured and students evolve their own creative sustainable practices.
