Thanks for the notice and the reference, Richard. :)
Just for the record, both the shao~lin and wu~dang variants of the monk class are primarily Chinese in inspiration, and the Monastery Temple in Carnelian is in the Chao (Thai) style. A large number of inhabitants of Carnelian's Song District actually originate in the various vassal states on the Songese periphery under military occupation. Particularly the Chao province, giving the perpetual rebellion carried out by the Chao Daeng Party. It's pretty much an open secret that more Liberal Carnelian governments fund the rebels and take in their families when the Songese governor stages periodic crackdowns on dissent. That's how the (in)famous entertainer Jyo Jyo ended up in Carnelian, for instance.
There is a Japanese culture and Japanese character classes such as the samurai and ninja do exist in the world of Mundus/Tian~xia. The current Songese dynasty is actually ethnically jade elven, albeit highly assimilated to elven Songese culture after more than two centuries of power.
There are a very few jade elves living in Carnelian (mainly in the Song District), and some of them probably offer training in exotic character classes under the right social or commercial circumstance. But they're a totally different group, and I'd need to do more research to see whether the sohei would be a variant of the shao~lin monk, another monk variant, or a different class entirely. My immediate instinct would be the third choice, given that the sohei ethos, social position, and weapons of choice don't look identical to the monk class.
