The Spiritual or Outer realms, being infinitely vast, contain all objects of the imagination of mortal minds. This spells harnesses poetic talent to draw some of this variety forth, allowing the summoning of
extemporaneous variants of creatures native to these realms.
Precise use of this spell must be chosen by the caster and adjudicated by the DM, as with illusion magic. As a general rule, only one functional alteration which grants a moderate advantage can be made. A variant Celestial lion might have an extra head and thus bite attack, or a variant bearded devil could possess wings and a fly movement of 30 ft. (6 squares).
Any advantage should be balanced by an equivalent comparative disadvantage—such as a halved movement rate, the loss of an attack, or a missing special ability. Overall challenge rating should not increase, but an intelligent caster will summon monsters whose strengths meet the needs of her immediate situation and whose weaknesses are less consequential.
Cosmetic adaptation as desired is also usually possible
—an Abyssal wolf, for instance, may appear as a clawed, carnivorous horse with a rotting hide. This may itself grant an advantage of confusion or camouflage, and imposes a -4 penalty on skill checks used to identify the creature or summoning magic.
Alignment may never be altered, as a Spiritual creature's essence is inseparable from the ideal incarnated in its native Plane of existence. All creatures summoned with a single spell share the same variant type and this type may not be altered after casting.
