That package is not available in Ubuntu 12.04 or 13.10. Without it, the compiler gives the following error: "bin/../deps/crystal: error while loading shared libraries: libunwind.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".

I have however been able to use the compiler in osx without much hassle.

Any thoughts?

I think you need to install ibgc-dev:

sudo apt-get install libgc-dev

You can also take a look at the Vagrant file: https://github.com/manastech/crystal/blob/master/Vagrantfile

Hmm.. I just see that in the main github page it says to install "libgc" in Ubuntu. If "libgc-dev" works for you let me know and I'll update that info.

Thanks!

I did install libgc-dev, but it didn't change anything.
In the Vagrantfile the packages mentioned are build-essential, git, libpcre3-dev, libunwind7-dev, libgc-dev, and curl. I have all of these installed except libunwind7-dev which has no installation candidate and has been replaced by libunwind8 (which I also have installed).
