usually board provides enough power to a single upto two GPU (crossfire)
Then un-powered risers, the GPU draws power(iba to sa power na nsa 4,6,8 pins) directly from the board (which is not good, kasi ma sstress ang board mo)
While powered risers provide extra to GPU from external source or directly from power supply. so less stress sa board. and this is good.

Need doge for riser? pwede mong i mine muna ang 2GPU on-board,

Question lang po.

check the first post of this thread. andun rig ko. and pasok na pasok sa budget mo.

on your first setup. maybe youll need a monitor. pra mkita mo anung nangyayari sa PC,
if sure ka ng gumagana.. you can un-plugged the monitor.
then iccocontrol mo yung Mining Rig gamit ang remote desktop.

I managed to buy somthing similar from japan home center, pero mababaw lang yun nabili ko, like 8 inches high, so hindi mailagay ang mobo & vidcard sa isang tray lang. WIll have to stack it, then make holes sa base ng upper tray para maka daan doon ang riser cables. not an elegrant solution. especially coz malambot yun plstic. anyway, i like ur trays a lot better =)

btw, yun rig sa left (4gpu) looks like it runs hot! kmusta ang temps nya?

nahihiya pa ako mag share ng pics ng rig ko. looking at everybody's rigs, puro gold/plat psus... ang lotech tuloy ng psus ko right now -- bronze lang. install ko muna yun gold psu nabili ko today then i'll share pics tomorro. wish me luck sa pag install, coz i dont wana f*ck it up. (at least right now tumatakbo rig ko -- 4x 280x + 1x 270x -- but i'm greedy and want to make it 5x 280x with a psu upgrade hehehe)

pics to follow =)

@jonong16

bro these black trays are available at SM North EDSA department store basement. was looking for fruit containers like TBG suggested but my sister suggested these trays since the recessed front end allows airflow inside the tray without need for any cutting or modding. these trays are definitely more than 20cm tall by estimate. good thing I got the risers as exposure of the bottom end of the GPU (the part having the golden fingers) allows for better heat dissipation. I think these containers are for organizing stuff, and yes they are stackable.

as for the temps:

gpu 0 = 280X = T 73 = core 1000 volt 1100 mem 1500 hash 670

gpu 1 = 280X = T 72 = core 1050 volt 1080 mem 1500 hash 710

gpu 2 = 280X = T 73 = core 1030 volt 1080 mem 1500 hash 700

gpu 3 = 290 = T 80 = core 900 volt -31 mem 1250 hash 830

gpu 0 is the card connected to the monitor. and I can't get it to hash faster despite intensive tweaking.

before I used risers, the HIS cards can do 720-730 hash. will find better settings.

anyway, the temps are very acceptable. right now, I am happy with the current rig 1.

PSU plays an important part. the Sapphire 290 does 780 khash before when hooked to an old 500W Enermaxx PSU. the platinum certified Zalman gave it a big boost to 800+. anyway the only components I splurge on are the cards and the PSU. PSU failure can burn everything, including the cards. so buy smart :)

nice! +1 to ur sis for suggesting the trays. =)

ur temps are a lot better than i thought they would be! cguro mahusay yun cooling ng HIS. I don't think my 280x dual x's can stay at that temp level in similar conditions. meron ka ba electric fan naka tutok sa kanila?

yun mga dual x oc ko nasa 70 - 71 C pero may stand fan naka tapat all day. dagdag 50w sa electric bill dahil dun  :-S

if u don't mind saying, ano yun khs/watt ratio ng rigs mo?

kc i believe i made a mistake when i decided to use bronze 80+ psus.. atm my rig is doing 3404khs @ 1270w, +50w for the electric fan pa. without the stand fan, the GPU gets hotter and then its fans work harder, yet still hotter dahil wala airflow away from the rig. so i decided to have the stand fan and pay for the extra 50w para na rin hindi malaspag ang gpu fans.

anyway later today i will install a seasonic x-1050 gold rated psu, malaman ko kung totoong 90% efficiency sya with lower wattage consumption. seasonic din naman yun mga bronze ko, but bronze & gold have a 8% efficiency gap daw, so malalaman ko mamaya kung totoo =) wish me luck hehe!

note that maximum efficiency happens around the mean, it's typically measured  at 50% load.  if you're max'ing out your powersupply, you can't get the rated efficiency.

@slide,

hey man! onga e, badtrip ano? pero i thought about that a while, and this is my conclusion:

assuming nasa 90% load ako sa bronze psu, then lumipat ako sa gold where i'm also at 90% load, dapat yun savings mag scale din dba? (like 8% or somthing)

the savings would be even better kung nasa 95% load ako sa bronze then switch to gold or platinum and only do 50% load there.. but then, that would mean i have to buy a big bad 1500w gold/plat psu hahaha ayoko :P

anyway, check out the pic i attached, natuwa ako e ...

apparently i can expect 90% efficiency at around 800w (ganun kc ang balak kong consumption)

once i've installed this thing, i'll measure the wattage. then i'll share the results =)

Done reconfiguring my rig: now runs on PSU1: seasonic x-1050 gold and PSU2: seasonic m12ii bronze 850

5gpus are all Sapphire R9-280x dual x oc (uefi) (thanks to Maru for giving this gpu good feedback)

mobo is gigabyte 970a-ds3p (thanks to Maru again!)

5x risers are all powered 1x - 16x 30cm, bought from hashpuppy

ram is 2x 4gb ddr3-1600 kingston hyperX (was using it sa main desktop, which used to have 24gb and now only has 16gb.. i know, overkill dba?)

2gb flashdrive na kingston traveller (6 yrs old)

2x 1000w avr hi-tech brand (bought from avesco frisco, look for jett and ask for a cash discount). I will replace these with 1x 2000w later today.

power switch = ballpen

efficiencity: atm it does 3670+ kh/s on 1400w = 2.62 khs / watt.

more on this in other topic (power related)

conngrats bro! mukhang full time na ang mining mo :)

glad to be of help!

mukhang mas maganda ang hash rates when using BAMT, but I cannot get my wireless adapters to work using BAMT so I am stuck with windows.

using risers will help alleviate the temps a lot.

@m.payao

the 290 has rpm of around 5k during afternoons, and temps can spike up to 82-85c (fan will spin at 100% at 85c due to auto-fan). otherwise 79c during the rest of the day. the noise is really irritating though :)
