Sapphire R9 290 (reference)

requires one 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI express power connector. the blower fan is extremely noisy and annoying since it emits a high pitched whine that can be heard over the drone of an industrial fan. seriously, the blower and the cooling system on this card needs an overhaul. performance is a steady 800khs but an undervolt is recommended as this card can go hot. and once the temps go beyond 85, the fan will go to 100% and the card will throttle down which will negatively impact mining performance.

a bios update was recently released by Sapphire to improve the baseline fan speed. the voltage can be adjusted using Sapphire Trixx or MSI Afterburner.

gpu clock = 970
memclock = 1350
intensity = 20
powertune = 20
worksize = 512
tc = 24000
gpu threads = 1
voltage = 1031

temps went up to 95 if stock voltages were used. at the lowered voltage, I get 80-84c. fan usually gets to 100% duty cycle.

I suggest to avoid reference design 290s because they really run hot, are noisy, and they tend to throttle easily.

@m.p...

try thread concurrency at 8192 then if it works, try to add 2048 until cgminer crashes. fine tune the TC setting then to the optimum value your 290 can support. do this at stock voltage and clocks. then get the best memory overclock you can achieve without crashing. then get the best gpu clock also. sometimes the best value is a lower value. Trixx or Afterburner have an apply setting you can use real time to check if the parameters are acceptable. wait until cgminer reports a stable value (sometimes the khash drops but goes up in 2-3 minutes). then try to adjust voltages to the lowest setting without crashing.

from there just fine tune the settings :)

my khash drops if I set a higher voltage or gpu clock. khash should be 800 ideally. but optimized settings should net you better values :)

good luck!

Guys, meron HIS brand na R9-280x .. priced at 13700 sa tpc sold by PC Crane / elizamaeflores ang handle.

Maganda kaya ito for mining doge ? it's among the cheapest options out there.. medyo malaki price diff from a sapphire vapor-x kaya napatingin tuloy ako =)

@jono...

if that is HIS IceQX2 280X I would recommend that brand. I am using 3 of those presently.

advantages:

voltage unlocked for on-the-fly tweaking via MSI Afterburner or Sapphire Trixx!
very effective heatsink
almost silent fan operation
stable at low voltage (I am using it at 1030)
budget friendly
out-of-the-box 700khash (I lowered the voltage to lessen the temps from 85c to 74c)

issues:

requires two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors

I will not hesitate to promote this card :)

settings for 720khash (lower temps):
gpu threads = 2
tc = 8192 or 11200
gpu clock = 1030
memclock = 1500
voltage = 1031
intensity = 13
powertune = 20

settings for 730-740khash (higher temps):
gpu threads = 2
tc = 18000
gpu clock = 1070
memclock = 1700
voltage = 1100
intensity = 13
powertune = 20

review of the Sapphire 280X Dual X (I have 2 units):

verdict = recommended if you are willing to tweak it

advantages:

semi-silent fan operation
widely available

issues:

will require one 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI-E power connector
out-of -the-box 500+ khash
voltage unlocked via Sapphire Trixx only (Trixx feels buggy to me)
both cards crash when voltage is lowered to less than 1100
runs hotter than HIS 280X because of higher running voltage (around 82c)

settings for 720khash:
gpu threads = 2
tc = 8192
gpu clock = 1080
memclock = 1500
voltage = 1162
intensity = 13
powertune = 20

it runs hot but the fan noise is bearable. same output as the HIS 280X in khash but you have to overclock the gpu core to 1080 and set the voltage to 1162. and the card crashes when underclocked to below 1100 based on my experience, even if I lower it to stock clocks.

Hello Maru,

Thanks v.much sa reply mo. Ok pala yun HIS. Sa ngayon gusto ko na lang alamin yun consumption nya.

Kanina nag punta ako sa Hardware section ng Landmark trinoma, I wanted to buy an Omni watt meter, kaso wala silang benta. Never daw nagkaron ng stock in the 5 months na nagtatrabaho doon yun kausap kong merchandiser ng Omni.

GUsto ko kc sukatin ang consumption ng desktop ko ngayon, as I change the intensity and fan-speed settings of my gpu

At the moment, I have some data to share pero wrong section ito.. my vidcard is only 6850 kc.. I'll post it in the correct section na lang

@ Maru..

further regarding HIS .. 2 versions pala sya, both are called His R9 280X iPower IceQ X2
but 1 is tagged "Turbo Boost"
the other is tagged "Boost" lang.

Price difference of around 500 pesos lang naman

I'm guessing yun "turbo boost" version ang better deal between the 2?

A side topic, sabi sa tech specs page ng HIS  (link below)  kailangan daw 750w ang gamit na PSU, totoo ba sir? Kc 650W lang ang PSU ko (Corsair TX650W) and I hesitate to buy another PSU at this time. My other peripherals are:

1x i5-3570K CPU
2x 8GB DDR3-1600
2x 4GB DDR3-1600
1x 2TB SATA Seagate
1x 1TB SATA Seagate

I hope you can give me idea especially sa PSU issue.. TIA! =)

@jonong168

bro I refer to this for estimated power consumption: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

card manufacturers would prescribe suggested PSU wattages just to make sure the card gets enough juice to function well, but those are overestimated just to be on the safe side/

nothing wrong with following manufacturer's recommendations.

however I have run my Sapphire R9 290 using a barebones PC rig with an Enermax 500W PSU. just make sure your PSU is reliable and delivers good output if you will use the PSU calculator recommendations. Seasonic makes great PSUs BTW.

for your situation I would suggest you get a 1250W Seasonic so you can add more cards in the future. since you have a K processor I am assuming your motherboard is enthusiast class as well. get a bigger PSU for headroom and upgrade options.

thanks for the update on the HIS 280X cards. I wasn't aware of the existing versions. I have no idea what version of boost I am using, as long as they have that big heatsink on top I would get it :)

Thanks v.much for the link. I inputted my system specs, tapos assume vidcard ay 1x R9-280X. Sabi daw I need 400w (recommended) kung 0% capacitor aging.

Anyway my mobo is Asrock z77 extreme4. Solid capacitors daw. Still, I got the numbers for 10% and 20% capacitor aging anyway. It came out 435W kapag 10% aged, tapos 470W kapag 20% aged.

Based sa #s na ito parang hindi naman ma22naw ang rig ko if i should use my 650w corsair hehehe so cge I guess it's worth trying out.

BTW, related question, ano ang advantages and disadvantages ng PSU na naka relay? using the cable (naka picture ni hashpuppy in tpc forums) ...
Kc isip ko lang ang mahal ng 1250w na psu. what if I just get 2x 650W tapos naka relay, would they give comparable power or have comparable capacity sa 1x 1250w na psu?

Thanks for the quick feedback =)

Maganda nga yung HIS. I have 3 of them.
So far these are more than a month old pero okay na okay parin. Tama ung sabi sa taas, mataas ung asic quality nila (lower operating voltage)

For MSI 280x Gaming OC. I have 2 of these and masasabi ko lang, medyo weak yung fan. Ngayon kasi nagloloko na. Napapansin ko lang hindi na magkasing bilis yung speed nung fans. Also, if you're using these, don't forget to flash the BIOS. Kung hindi, papatak ng 90c pataas ung vrm temps.

Powercolor 280x. Npansin ko lang , mainit talaga to compared sa iba. They run 79c at 100% fan 1080mv and 1050mhz. Needs a lot of spacing between cards. Yung airflow kasi from side a to side b ng card, walang papunta sa sides. So yung exhaust nung isa yung intake susunod. So painit ng painit yung mga card.

Sapphire r9 290, mainit din to. Nasa 79-82c at 90% fan. Pinaka malakas na fan noise so far. Lahat ng 290 reference card alam q ganito. Best thing about this card is that it needs less spacing. One direction lang kasi yung exhaust nila at papunta yun sa likod ng case. Also its khash/power ratio ay mganda.

Yes sir,
Consider this R280x = 275-300W  x 3 = 850 - 900W
Undervolt  = minus 30W and above/ GPU  so that becomes 900 - 90(can go up) = 810W(can go low dahil sa undervolt) (according to boss lloyd's post it is 230-260W mas mababa pla)
System = probably around 150-200W,
That means 810+150W = 960W
So that means 1000W pwede na.kung gusto mong mjo safeka. go higher.
Tsaka 2GPU lang naman sabi mo knina diba? so 1000W is enough

bro download Sapphire Trixx software so you can adjust the gpu voltage individually or as a set for similar cards. it works on the Dual-X.

nka windows ako that time. then upon playing MSI Afterburner, nag hang yung system
hard shutdown, pag boot nya ayaw na basahin yung GPU,
kausap ko yung seller, ttry nming ipa distro.
kaya trauma n ako sa Afterburner,
After that incident i switched to Linux BAMT, and im happy compare to my previous 2 OS (Xubuntu 12.04 and Windows7)
So stick n ako sa Linux BAMT.

R9 280x 735 297 399 1.34 2.47 0.54

wow based on that table, if you want to achieve fast return of investment and recoup the card cost ASAP, the R9 270 is the way to go.

if you want to save up on electricity cost and earn potentially more in the future provided that the cards don't die out, the R7 260x is the card of choice.

hi guys,

so nag entrada ako ng figures above sa coinwarz doge coin mining profitability. based on the figures sa table na nilagay ni anti online

tapos based sa local prices ng vidcards (sapphire brand both, parehong yun dual -x variant)

what i found is this:

62.60 days to cost recovery si 270
60.05 days to cost recovery si 280x

what it means is we make more profit per (unit of time: week,day,hour) operating the 280x versus the 270

ang interpretation is that the profitability of running a 280x is better.

What's not considered in the computation: the cost of the whole rig, which includes, extra hi-powered PSU for the 280x

consider: 430 khs ni 270    :     730 khs ni 280x

ano ba tawag sa math, greatest common factor ? 5 unit ni 270 = 5x430 = 2150 khs
meanwhile 3 units ni 280x = 3x730 = 2190khs

now compare a rig that can run both setups:

5units ng 270 means 1000watts psu cguro, or 1050watts para may buffer ka

3 units ng 280x means  1000watts psu din e

costwise? 5x 8800 = 44K pisos
3x 14000 = 42K pisos

comparable talaga ano?

nagkakatalo lang konti it seems.

anyway if u want less vidcards to clean & maintain i suppose go for 280x. not to mention, space saving considerations: 3rigs naka 5x 280x has much more output than 3rigs naka 5x 270 and yet should occupy the same space at home

if u want piecemeal upgrades naman pala, go for 270 setup. kc u can get started with a lower budget, then as u earn, upgrade upgrade upgrade

about watts usage nga pala mga kapwa miners:

matakaw sa kuryente ang 2x 280x rig ko. based on omni watt meter, it uses 670 - 680 watts (altho 7watts ang idle consumption ng AVR na gamit ko)

the specs are

athlon ii x2 270 cpu (stock settings, my next project is to undervolt this baby)
2x sapphire dual x oc r9-280x (uefi)
2x 120cm fans attached sa casing

my psu is a seasonic m12ii 850w bronze model

alam nyo mga sir, i just modified the bios on my vidcards from stock 1225 down to 1100. yet bamt reports 1149v. in any case, yun orig na power draw nya (accg to omni reader) nung naka stock 1225v sya ay 760w !! so naka tipid ako ng almost 90watts sa pag uundervolt

kagabi natapos ko na isetup yung rig ko with 1 R9 270. nung nirun ko cgminer umabot sya ng 687 - 690 khs with 50 - 51C almost same na sya sa R9 280x kaya nagulat ako kasi based sa chart and sa hardware comparison around 450khs lang kaya ng card pero sakin umabot ng ganun and stable pa sya HW = 0 pa...pero hindi ko pa nacheck kung ilan yung power consumption nya sin wala pa ako Kill-A-Watt...and since past 12mn na yun pinatay ko nlng muna yung rig ko baka pag gising ko sira na VC ko.. I will test it again mamaya after work and iobserve ko pa kung ganun talaga kaya nya..

Nermi.

cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://stratum2.dogehouse.org:943 -O xxx:zzz --failover-only -o stratum+tcp://us-east.multipool.us:3352 -O xxx:zzz -I 17 -g 1 -w 256 --thread-concurrency 15232 --lookup-gap 2 --no-submit-stale --temp-cutoff 85 --auto-fan

Personally I dont have HIS (as it is not recommended by many pro miners)
meron lang akong Sapphire ang MSI.
so far, maingay ang Sapphire  and MSI tahimik.
at both 74C, sapphire is using 65% of its fan power
while MSI uses only 50+%
thats why i prefer MSI :)

halos pareho tayo ng config, pero 720-750 each sa akin.
ang difference lang natin sa config,

paglaruan mo lang yang dalawang yan. usually makukuha mo jan.

@anti online:
bago lang ba psu mo? u said it's 850w and since r9 270 only draws 200w dapat walang problem, but, if u r using an old psu (say more than 1.5 yrs old) tapos overclocked ang setup mo, ur psu might not be up to the task anymore.

from my personal experience kc, my pc crashes / reboots / display driver stoped responding and has recovered... nahuli ko ang culprit via gpuz: i saw that my vidcard's vddc actualy fell when i started mining, as in, idle = 1.125v (forced via trixx) then mining = 1.008v .. furthermore accdg to asrock extreme tuner, my 12v rail when idle is 12.8v tapos nagiging 11.2v while mining.

I conclude that my psu is on the fritz. sa mining lang naman. but clocking down, i can mine stably @ 1000core gets me 660khs sapphire 280x dual x oc (uefi).. dunno what the effect on my other components tho.. i'm still waiting for seasonic psu e ayoko bumili ng iba coz of bad experience (corsair grr hec 2x grrr)

@ arvie

ok i have the same vidcards and can get 720+ khs consistently but with the ff conditions:

engine = 1050

vddc => 1.135

when mining, hindi ko ginagamit ang desktop sa win7 x64 i can get just under 710 khs. basically papanoorin ko lang ang monitor hehehe

sa bamt rig ko, the numbers are a lot better. 720+ to 740+ khs on engine 1050 - 1080 .. depende sa vidcard some are more pliant to overclocking

lastly, and this worked for me sa win7 x64 .. try tc 8193 rather than tc 8192. just try it, see what happens. try it, then raise ur core / engine by increments of 10mhz. allow 1-2 mins of mining and observe.

then post ur results here =)

p.s.
the highest core i got from any dual x 280x was 1090 pero hindi stable sa undervolted settings ko. i didnt see the point of overvolting, since i feel malalaspag lang yun parts
