Results: After accounting for seasonal effects and an underlying increasing trend in monthly suicide rates, the overall suicide rate among 10- to 17-year-olds increased significantly in the month immediately following the release of 13 Reasons Why (incidence rate ratio [IRR], 1.29; 95% CI, 1.09-1.53); Holt-Winters forecasting revealed elevated observed suicide rates in the month after release and in two subsequent months, relative to corresponding forecasted rates. Contrary to expectations, these associations were restricted to boys. Among 18- to 29-year-olds and 30- to 64-year-olds, we found no significant change in level or trend of suicide after the show's release, both overall and by sex. The show's release had no apparent impact in the control analyses of homicide deaths within any age group.
Conclusion: The release of 13 Reasons Why was associated with a significant increase in monthly suicide rates among US youth aged 10 to 17 years. Caution regarding the exposure of children and adolescents to the series is warranted.

Based on the Outlander novel series by Diana Gabaldon, the 7-season show is one of Starz's biggest hits. Now, a recent announcement, which ties Outlander's fate to Netflix, will make the series even bigger ahead of its return. In the show's first season, Claire Randall (Caitrona Balfe), a former Second World War military nurse in Scotland, is transported back to 1743, where Claire falls in love with a Highland warrior, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Jamie and his clansmen are pursued by the brutal Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall (Tobias Menzies), the ancestor of Claire's present-day husband, Frank.
By season 6, which was released in 2022, Jamie and Claire moved to the American colonies. Trying to live peacefully in the hills of North Carolina, the couple find themselves at the center of the storm that's brewing between the crown and the colonizers. Outlander's season 7 timeline sees the Frasers swept up in the American Revolutionary War, prompting them to return to Scotland. While the first part of the seventh season premiered in 2023, Starz has yet to release the second batch of episodes, which means Outlander fans have been waiting awhile for some good news.
Although Outlander season 6 premiered on a week-by-week schedule back in 2023, and has been available to Starz subscribers since then, the full outing just landed on Netflix during the first week of May 2024. While Netflix is still pushing its own original series, the streamer has seen great success with licensing other networks' top shows. HBO dropped several big-name series on the competitor platform, from Ballers to Sex and the City, prompting viewers to revisit the well-worn flagship titles. Clearly, both parties in the deal are hoping Outlander's arrival on Netflix will boost its popularity.
Given that Starz isn't the most accessible of streaming platforms or TV networks, the strategy is a solid one. Although critical reviews for Outlander have only continued to become more and more glowing with each outing, it's hard for any series to sustain its momentum as time wears on. Even the undeniable chemistry and charm of Claire and Jamie's relationship will start to fizzle a bit, so introducing the acclaimed series to a new audience makes tons of sense. Unfortunately, the first batch of Outlander season 7 episodes won't be streaming on Netflix, though they've been on Starz since the summer of 2023.
With nearly a year passing since the first batch of Outlander season 7 episodes aired on Starz, fans are likely eager for new content. The show's appearance on Netflix certainly speaks volumes to Starz's commitment to boosting Outlander's reach. For now, long-time viewers and newcomers alike have plenty of time to stream the first six seasons of the show, allowing even more folks to be caught up to speed ahead of Outlander season 7, part 2's debut. With Netflix still boasting the most subscribers of any streamer (and being the most accessible), Outlander is primed for another big moment.
