wehad a zodiac. it failed miserably. we have a few pool shops locally. one that think zodiac's are the ducks guts, and one that can't stand them. guess which one has been in business for longer (and where we just bought our new chlorinator from)?

Zodiac chlorinators are great we have sold, serviced them and been the warranty agents for over 4 years aswell as selling them prior to that as clearwaters.

but in saying that dont ever buy the latest model. Zodiac always rushes there products through research and testing. Wait for about a year and you will get a fantastic product.

Just the thread I was looking for :) My old Monarch died and I've looking on the net for self cleaning salt chlorinator reviews but there doesnt seem to be much out there. The pool guy I contacted offered a Hurlcon VX9 installed for about 1600.00 I cant seem to find any reviews on the unit but the spec sheet talks it up (as expected). Has anyone heard of these before?

One thing the Pool Installer did recommend though was not to upgrade to the pH or pH+ models .. apparantly Zodiac have had lots of problems with these not giving correct readings and changing pH levels too high or low.

Your better off using the vacuum head on the pole and a bit of spare time imo .. which incidently I also had to do both times after the Barracuda wasted a couple of hours on each occasion amusing itself!

Have had the Zodiac Tri ph for over a year and no problems with mine.

Connect up 30 litres of acid and off it goes.

I know from having pools as a kid and using other peoples that eye soreness can be a problem, but this keeps the ph spot on and the kids are in it all day and no problems.

As for the barracudas, I purchased 1 of these and after 12 months reverted back to the old vacuum pole and head in 1 hand and a stubbie in the other.

i put a tri ph+ on my pool and it is great. i upgraded from a basic dial chlorinator to this thing that measures chlorine and ph and doses acid. i buy the big 25L acid from bunnings for 30 bucks and it lasts, well it is still half full after nearly 9 months. i don't do anything other than a skim of the leaves, empty the skimmer box and backwash once a fortnight. i check the water every week in summer and once a month in winter and it is always good. in summer it can detect when the chlroine has dropped and just doses more in. i think its worth the 2k+ i spent on it.

The Hurlcon does have a full 5 year warranty on the cell though, and they seem a bit cheaper to replace as well. Mind you, they only give a pro-rata warranty on the power supply, so am not too sure what that means!

Hi, just wondering where you could get the Zodiac for that price???? My old system is playing up so i'm looking to upgrade, and i like the idea of being able to add a ph control etc system at a later date..

I have just installed a Tri on my small pool. I have noticed that the time on the unit runs fast nearly 1 hour per day. When I asked the warranty people about it they told me that if you install it yourself the warranty is void. Interesting that this is not mentioned in any of the literature I read.

In addition I did not connect the PH section up at first and the manual said that it was disabled from the manufacturer and needed to be enabled. This was not the case and the unit enabled and disabled the acid at its own free will. I got an error message on the PH too. Turns out to reset the error you have to hold down the select button for 6-8 seconds which is another operation conveniently left out of the documentation.

To Zodiac... My daughter has a 2 dollar watch that keeps good time. You need to see the people that make 2 dollar watches for the timers in your thousand dollar controllers to make your product a better one. And include all the instructions in the manual as an $88 call out is not reasonable to pay for someone to hold the select button in for 8 seconds.(I did not pay this but could see how someone that did not want to learn would.)

Hopefully this is the end of my issues with what was described to me as a set and forget product at sales time.

Don't let the slime bags off the hook. You probably got some autobot idiot who is taught to say "no"...to everything.

I did not explain myself properly sorry. The warranty guy told us that if it was not installed by a pool specialist that the warranty was void but he "was sure" that we would have done that so just bring it in and he would replace it. He also mentioned to us that if we were contacted by Zodiac that he "was sure" that we would tell them the same.

Seems that their warranty agents are much nicer than the company direct.

Zodiac have been great about it. A rep came around to check, and even with the chlorine over 10ppm it was still pumping out chlorine at 100%. The time clock would also LOSE time by about 10mins per day.

Yes, I do. I am aware of hydrogen buildup if the pool blanket is left on too long, but it's my understanding that the ACL probe mistakes hydrogen for chlorine and would LOWER the chlorine output.

In any case, I have tested the chlorinator for a week without the cover and it made no difference.

I am looking at getting the large zodiac tri so I don't have to run the pump as long (the mid size would cover it on my 45,000L pool), would I need a larger pump to run the large or are all three pretty much the same?

I am surprised by this statement from Zodiac. I had a gecko commit suicide in the power supply unit. This was replaced under warranty (including adding mesh grills to all the vent holes). There was no question of who installed it, the only question was "Had I register the warranty on-line?", which I did before taking it to a Zodiac service agent in Darwin (bought on-line from Maple).

I searched online and found Warranty information that's in the TRI manual- it says "This warranty is only applicable if the product has been installed by an accredited Zodiac TRi Installer. The warranty may be void if this has not been adhered to."

I have a tri mid Pro and have similar problem of unit keep generating chlorine.

I have had Zodiac technician out and he suggested to set unit to ACL 5 and calibrate ACL probe to the water when there was 2.5 to 3 ppm of free chlorine. The unit stopped making chlorine for a day and a hlf and this dropped chlorine below 2 ppm but then started again and continued making chlorine.

I have a manual probe and have noted when I test pool water after unit has been making chlorine the ORP reading is very low below 200 mv but if I leave the water overnight in container the ORP reading increases to over 600,700 mv.

I have also read that SWG creates hydrogen and this in some swimming pools can cause the ACL sensor to to make erraneous low readings.

Has any one had any resolution to this problem.

At 5 mine was continously making chlorine I put it down to 4 and it stopped making chlorine as I had 5 ppm chlorine but have not checked last 3 days as I was not at the house.

I will be interested to know what the technician suggests. I also doubt weather you calibration fluid is dodgy as too many people are experiencing the same problem.

If I don't get any resolution with my testing I will ring them and suggest they drop me back to only PH automation.

UPDATE: After further investigation it seems that I have a very high phosphate level in my pool. This is probably because I use tank water to top up my pool.

Now that I have reduced it with a starver (btw, my pool hasn't looked this clear in a long time!) I can now check to see if the phosphates are wreaking havoc with the ORP probe trying to read the correct level of chlorine in the water....

UPDATE: I have emptied a litre of starver in my pool over the last couple of days, so theoretically it should have very little or no phosphates in the water now.

The chlorine level is >5ppm and the SWG is still saying low chlorine and pumping in the chlorine :(

I have been doing a lot of reading on troublefreepool.com and it seems that the hydrogen that SWGs produce can become dissolved in water fouling the ORP reading.

Now as mentioned earlier I do have a pool blanket but I have left it off for the last week so the H gas will definitely be absent from the water.

1. Turn your SWG off (leave filtration on) for a couple of days and test it on thursday. Turn it on if needed. Your SWG is STILL generating hydrogen gas while it is running. There are people working on a fix for this atm.

I dont have anything that would aerate the water, but I have directed the output jets up so they push the water right up and out of the pool briefly. This happened for four hours tonight...

I wish the TRi-PRO would allow you to see the actual mV reading the the ORP probe is seeing.

Spoke with my pool installer today. He and apparently Zodiac are out of ideas and are doing one last experiment. If it doesn't workk they are going to give me a refund on the PRO unit and give me just a pH unit. The pH part of the system is working perfectly.

If only there was a was to get rid of the hydrogen, or at least have a probe that is not susceptible to hydrogen skewing the measurements...

No joy with mine, unit continues to make chlorine. My manual ORP reader suggests the ORP value is negative or very low. I decided to recalibarate at a chlorine level of 4PPM but then unit stopped making chlorine. As chlorine dropped below 1 I managed to get unit to make chlorine by turning it to 6. So in a nutshell I am using in a manual way to control amount of chlorine. It either continues to make chlorine or it does not. There is definatately something that is fouling things up. I also would like to know Vectorskink results with new probe. I am also thinking of asking Zodiac to downgrade to the PH unit as this is not working.

UPDATE: Checked the chlorinator last night when it just turned on and it was making chlorine. Tested the ACL and it was around 1.5ppm so it looks like problem resolved!

If you have the PRO version and having problems, give Zodiac a ring and get them to replace the ACL probe with the updated one.
