A minimum of three years of experience working with clients and their dogs, with solid experience coaching and counseling clients through challenging behavior modification issues, such as fear and anxiety, reactivity and/or aggression.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics lists career opportunities for fitness trainers and instructors among its top choices between now and 2028. Jobs are expected to grow by 13%, over twice the expected growth rate for jobs overall.

Many older adults experience a fear of falling. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. A Matter of Balance is a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. A Matter of Balance community classes can be offered both in-person and virtually. The in-person Matter of Balance includes 8 two-hour sessions, and the virtual A Matter of Balance includes 9 two-hour sessions. Both the in-person and virtual sessions are led by two trained facilitators for a small group of 8-12 participants. This nationally recognized program was developed at the Roybal Center at Boston University.

MaineHealth provides master trainer training sessions that prepare organizations to offer A Matter of Balance in their communities. Master trainers are responsible for teaching the Matter of Balance curriculum to coaches and providing them with guidance and support as they lead the Matter of Balance classes.

This model was distributed and evaluated throughout the state of Maine. The collaborative developed a structured tool kit and curriculum as part of a master trainer program. Organizations can be licensed as master trainer sites to train coaches and implement the program in their communities. A Matter of Balance is now offered in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and British Columbia, Canada.

We will first meet the dog in a free in-home assessment to gain an understanding of the reasons for the aggression, anxiety, or fears. We will assess triggers and build a personalized training program for each unique dog and targeting their specific behavior. For fearful and anxious dogs, our trainers will work alongside owners to build confidence.

We understand how searching for an appropriate trainer for your pets' needs can feel overwhelming, so we've made the process a little easier for you both with our B&T Lecture on How to Pick a Trainer, this directory, and to help decode the "alphabet soup" of training certifications, see R+ Certifications - Appendix A _SHDS2022.pdf.

If you believe a trainer is missing from this directory, or you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email us at beha...@sdhumane.org.

At this time, the pet training field is unregulated and does not require certain standards of trainer education and skills are required. There is a push for standardizing training methods used in the field to create best practices and reduce some of the confusion around choosing a trainer as well as the use of inhumane or outdated training methods. The International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) has released a Position Statement on Regulation in Animal Training and Behavior and the Certification Counsel for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) has called for mandating trainer certification. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviorists (AVSAB) has also released a statement on How to Choose a Trainer and another on Humane Dog Training methods.

Personal Training goes above and beyond the Personal Development Session to provide you with one-on-one or small group instruction to help you meet your fitness goals. Your trainer will be there by your side to help ensure you are using proper technique and to motivate you. As you progress, your trainer will modify your exercise program for optimum results. HealthPlex members use personal trainers for a variety of reasons:

At the end of the day, dogs have a hierarchy, which is very important to understand. Most times, an aggressive dog (whether they are dominant or fearful) is aggressive because they are making the decisions and they are trying to protect the property or protect their pack.

There are 6 stages in the development of socializing a puppy. The first is the Socialization Period (5-7 weeks). This is when weaning occurs, and relationships with people start. At stage, the pup will become fearless to everything and everyone he meets during this critical period. At this point, if the pup is taken away from the mother and litter mates too early, and is hand raised, the pup can form too strong of a bond with the type of person who raised him, and may become timid as an adult, and have a hard time relating to other dogs properly.

As you can see, there are many critical stages in the development of a puppy. During this time, the puppy needs to be exposed to as many positive experiences as possible. The pup should meet over 100 new people within his first three months of life. All sorts of people, young, old, male, female, kids, babies, people of diff color, diff voices, you name it! He should also experience many, many different and new situations as well. He should have been exposed to new and fearful things such as cars, thunderstorms, fireworks, loud noises during his socialization period (5-7 weeks). He should have also met many types of (vaccinated) dogs as well.

Frank is currently the dog trainer at Cedarcrest Animal Hospital and has worked to successfully rehabilitate all types of dogs with many different behavioral issues. Frank is currently finishing the certification process with CCPDT (Certified Council of Professional Dog Trainers). Knowing that health and behavior go hand in hand, Frank works with our veterinarians as a team to address behavior issues in animals.

Over the course of my career in the fitness industry, I have personally hired, trained, developed, and managed hundreds of personal trainers. I have managed fitness departments, entire gyms, and I have been a gym owner and a personal training studio owner. Throughout the years a few trends became crystal clear. It became obvious which trainers would find success and which trainers would struggle or even fail.

Sal is one of the hosts of the Mind Pump Podcast. At the age of 18 his passion for the art and science of resistance training was so consuming that he decided to make it a profession and become a personal trainer. By 19 he was managing health clubs and by 22 he owned his own gym. After 17 years as a personal trainer he has dedicated himself to bringing science and TRUTH to the fitness industry.

When you meet with your trainer for the first time, listen closely. If the trainer fails to fully address your health history and ask questions, you should be cautious. And if he or she says anything about making clients cry or puke, find someone else.

When you need help getting into better physical shape, you should see a licensed personal trainer. Just like medical doctors, personal trainers work with a wide variety of clients, each with different needs.

We all can use a hand, especially when it comes to big tasks like gaining muscle mass, improving cardiovascular health, or increasing body mobility. Having a trainer help you plan and execute workouts as well as organize healthy lifestyle decisions goes a long way.

Personal trainers serve as a mental and emotional boost for clients, especially on days when desire, sense of urgency, and accountability are low. One of the main benefits of having a personal trainer is increased accountability, creating a plan, and sticking with it.

Dogs that display fear and aggressive issues need confidence-building and desensitization exercises as part of their program. Knowing how to properly time reward markers and use food is important to help build confidence and better behavior with these dogs. The long-term goal is to change their emotional response to their triggers.
